have you tried making the pins on the base thinner so you can fit more on? I can imagine that the top is pretty good already, but those are pretty thick pins on the base.

Yep, that's definately coming up in one of my next base revisions. These pins were cut with a 1/32" slotting saw that was a 2" OD. I also tried a 1/64" slotting saw that I could only get in 2 1/2" OD from grizzley.com. It turns out that particular saw was too flimsy and the commercial arbor I had really didn't work for it even on my aluminum test run.
But since then I've found a different set of saws and working on making my own arbor to provide support to the saw blade. I also found that master-carr is a good source for many other thicknesses, so other options exist.
I will cut a thinner pin matrix, I'm thinking maybe an ultra thin base, like .040 or .050 base with a .070 tall pin. Diamond and a 30 degree angle vertically.
Just not looking forward to another half a day cutting pins and reducing the pin size doubles the amount of work....![]()
Martin, I was wondering if you tried making any GPU blocks (not full cover) to compete against the current offerings?
I have not, I've actually been busy amaking P5kdelux chipset and mosfet blocks:
but I do plan on giving a GPU block a try.
I really do think there is more room for improvement on the GPU side than the CPU side.
At a minimum I'll make a custom top for my old MCW60 base sitting here on my workbench.
Anyhow, I did try a new update on the CPU block too. Just took the block out and milled the base down thinner. I went from about an .085" base thickness to .045". Unfortunately even though the loop isn't settled out, I'm seeing a substantial icrease in temps![]()
On the plus side, even though I've now wasted this block base, I may have room for improvement by using a thicker base. Maybe something in the .100" to .150" base thickness is ideal for that particular pin arrangement.
