I didn't want to start a new thead =>ASUS P5K vs. P5W DH so I hope the question would get a reply or two here.
I have a P5W with e6600, and have ordered a Q6600 GO to upgrade my system.
I have been reading this thread and noted that the P5K is a very good board. Along the way I ready the 35 chipset OC's better than the 975 chipset. It would be great to get my OC to 3.4 or so. How much worse is the P5W for overclocking the quads? (I do realize there are variables and exceptions) My board is a 1.02G.
Thanks up front.

The P5K is better with for overclocking the Quad as a rule. Later Chip with a higher FSB capability and a BIOS with more options (similar to P5B) voltage settings and memory subtimings that can assist the quad overclock. Check this thread out - http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=152603
I personally have also found it more flexible with memory - especially 4x1GB than my P5W was. Q6600 should be able to reach 3.6 on air on P5K - latest Q6600 seem to be even better.
That said why not wait for the x48 which is coming out this month. Gygabyte seem to have a MB ready to go as soon as its launched. No point buying into 'old' technology-lol!

I read much of that thread, where I got some info on the 35 chipset being superior with quad cores.
Why are people using 4- 1 gig sticks vs. 2- 2 gig sticks of RAM? Back in the day 2 sticks overclocked better than 4, reason for the question.
Yeah, "old technology"!How to place a time line on what components are new and for how long?

I really like the ASUS boards, rather keep with that IF I even updgrade to the P5K. This P5W has really been a rock for me, best rig ever of the several I have built over the years.

Only reason I have 4x1Gb is that they clock better than 2x2GB and they are dirt cheap considering they are micron D9's. I loved my P5W as well but when I bought a e6850 and the ballistix I decidid to get a P5K as it was getting good reviews on overclocking. and it seems more forgiving with the memory. I previously had some corsair XMS 6400 which jad promo chips - couldnt clock it past 800 on the P5W with the CPU at 400x9 - went straight in at 1000 on the P5K.
PS- dont use Asus update on these boards - can fail as I discovered which is why I now have a premium as an RMA replacement..

Fair enough - better than using asus update but you will need to buy a USB stick cos the latest BIOS's are getting or are already too big for a floppy.
If I were you I would stick with what you have till after xmas. and see whats on the market. The X48 chips are cherrypicked x38 chips with greater overclocking potential. These MB should exceed the capabilities of the P5K re overclockability but that remains to be seen - x48 launches this month according to reports.
