RAID drivers is the #1 reason i have a floppy. BIOS flashes for mobos and video cards is the 2nd reason... i've flashed countless mobos and video cards i can't even begin to tell you... i remember flashing my nf7-s at LEAST (i'm not near joking) 75 times, not to mention my first 6800GT and 6800 ultra AGP cards, a crapload of x800/850 series cards, x1800, etc...

this all requires floppy... just make sure you don't place floppy drives on top of CRT monitors (not that i have those anymore) or subs/speakers... and they shouldn't become corrupt.

Enough of the rant. I'm sure I've already posted a link in this thread once on how to set up a flash drive for BIOS flashing.
I have attached a link that I found after going through a ton of problems using a usb floppy trying to install drivers for windows. It appears Windows XP only supports certain drive type to load drivers during install. Everything appears normal and it lets you select the drivers, but then during install process it will prompt you to put the floppy in over and over.

Figured this might save some folks some time and money.

While you are on the subjest of saving people time : the above link refers to problems with USB floppy drives, I think most people are refering to the flat 40 pin ribon type internal drives rather than complicating a simple item with USB.

Here's a shot of the Memorex USB Floppy's PID that I used before switching back to a Mitsumi Internal Media Reader/Floppy. One of my recent boards, either the DFI Dark or Abit IP35 had an issue w/ the USB drive during XP F6 installs. IMO the combo drive's cheaper and more useful. Also, the USB drive made quite a racket. And of course there's the whole, "works wo/ issue" factor.

I'm still curious about JP10/J16 located near cpu fan header on this board. Can someone tell me what exactly is it? I've been read user's manual and got no information about that.

I was using that ram in this board and I had no problems. My sticks ran about the same on my DFI P35 and Asus Commando but you may be one of the guys having troubles with high end D9GKX mems and the P35.

on page 54 of the manual it describes them.

On older boards the same jumpers were present, that is one of the ways overclocking was done in the middle ages. they are for manually configuring the cpu fsb. I haven't played with them yet, but I probably will.

For the new Intel Processors Leave at default! For Intel 800mhz FSB CPU's set jumpers to 800MHZ and so on.

I'm thinking I might force the 800 fsb to see if my latencies change. I wonder if we can basically lock it to a tighter strap this way? I guess I'll probably try sat. morning. In theory it would only affect base cpu fsb but who knows for sure yet? I haven't heard of anyone trying.

I don't want people to bork their boards to find out.... so saturday morning i will give it a shot and post my findings in this thread. Heck I got enough spare stuff to be back up and running in ten minutes if i kill my rig.

    Hello guys,
hopefully tomorrow ill be getting my new MB and I was just wondering should I try to use a 667 or 800 memory for the first time? I just hope this time it works... spend well over 3g on this rig about 2 weeks ago and I still can't enjoy it!

Smile Finally got all my parts, so now the fun begins!

This is my first post in quite a while. Last time I was here, I had a system based around a MSI Platinum+ motherboard with Opteron 170 processor.

I want to start by thanking everyone for their contributions to this site, and in particular, to this thread. I have already gotten a pretty good idea of where to start, but still need your feedback.

My motherboard says revision A1 on it. Is this what most of you have, or is there a "better" revision out there?

I am planning at using C-N's aircooled BIOS settings as a general guide on initial setup. If anyone else is running a similar setup with the B3 version of the Q6600 CPU, can you post your BIOS settings for me, so I can see how they differ from the settings he has been using?

I have tried to get good quality components for this build, and overall I am pretty happy (although a G0 stepping Q6600 would have been nice). Having said that, I want to ensure there are no glaring compatability issues between my components. So, please have a look at my signature and let me know if you think something is going to cause a problem.

Man this board is a difficult beast to tame but once you do...

Anyone have some good pics of how they mounted a fan on the chipset without dremeling off the T fin on the NB heatsink? preferably with a TRUE 120 or tuniq tower taking up space in the area... Just wondering because my chipset could be running a bit cooler and im looking to add a fan somewhere.
    Thanks in advance!

Adda a 60mm Fan over the finned PWM Area by the I/O Back plate it will drop you're temps about 7-10c on both NB/PWM !

I just attached it to the pwm heatsink fins with some 1 1/2" Machine screws through the fan screw holes and down between the fins of the heatsink and it spreads the fins slightly apart but creates the friction needed to keep it in place.

is this on the traspiper or non-transpiper version?

i have the transpiper and honestly dislike it... it's ugly, annoying, and mine had to be mounted slightly crooked in order for my power plug to plug into my PSU (my PSU sits on its side rather than its belly - that's how the TT Armor case is)... i wish i got the non-transpiper... i didn't even see that one available when i bought my T2R...
