So for gamers not really much gain to expect over current generation 1333FSB cpu's, but for multimedia/encoding purposes the extra cache helps...

Thx OBR I will go for another GO Q6600 then as my E6850 is sold...
Question : Why do some overclockers switch into d*ckmode when money is involved

Remark : They call me Pro Asus Saaya yupp, I agree

    OBR,
Those gaming test are relatively low FPS'...
Drop those IQ settings, you should be benching the CPU, not the GPU.
You were not supposed to see this.

Buddy of mine just tested the QX9650 the other day with Maximus and he was quite pissed by the fact that it showed up as a 12GHz CPU, supplied wrong voltage etc...

Now, how many of those results would be irrelevant if you took an average of 3-4 runs for each benchmark.

What I'm saying, the margin is far too small in some of them.

thats' because 2Mb cache ain't going to give differences in games like it does on CachePi 1M

largon - This is "real usage" test, if i have high-end GFX i tested only with high res and AA+AF ...

perkam - In every my review (on our web) i tested all of test 3x, 4x - results are average values from each tests ...

you might be testig "real world" environment, but your surely dont test the cpu with those setting.

stalker, bioshock and lost planet scream gpu limitation.

would be nice if you can rerun those test without gpu limitation. (aka lower res without AA/AF)

I have my eye on that Q9450.. I can wish for the Q9550 but thats a little pricey, would be nice for the higher multi though.

I would do some math concerning the board you're using. If you have a chipset that's not likely to be able to max out a 45nm chip, you may favor the multiplier of the current 1066mhz fsb chips.

I'd wait out for the Q9450--but I'm not under any pressure to buy (now that I have a E2140). Still, SSE4, more L2 cache, higher FSB, the same multiplier, higher speed, and same price. All those lead towards saying Q9450 for me. I'd wait it out if you can.

I think I may have missed something here, but what about mainboards? I can only presume that current boards like the popular Asus P5k series wont be compatiable with 45n chips or will it? Will 800Mhz RAM suite? Just seeing if or I will need to do is change the chip, choice being the Q9450 which appears to be the obvious choice. Cheap and easy to clock beyond the speed of the top processor.

If anyone has any answers? Would be nice to know; if its just the case of swapping chips, then all good. Otherwise it will benefit me more just to build a brand new base unit and turn the old one into a media centre.

good call smartass... Most, if not all, of the P35 boards are 45nm ready.

Thanks for the link, my mainboard has native support, so its just a case of swapping chips over. What about RAM though? will 800Mhz be compatiable?

sure thing buddy. It's just a matter of selecting the right divider/multiplier depending on your clock.

I'm so pleased my P5B deluxe will support Penryn. One of the earliest 965 boards turns out to be one of the best and very long-lived considering.

So next year I'll drop in a Penryn replacement, then in 09 I'll build a new desktop around nehalem and put this box out as a server or htpc or something.

    CPU: Intel i7 3770k. . . . . . . .Cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus
    Mobo: ASUS P8Z77-V Deluxe . . . . RAM: 4x4GiB GSkill Rampage 2133MHz 1.65V
    Video: Sapphire Radeon 7970 . . . Drives: Intel 520 SSDs
Power: Seasonic Platinum 860W. . .Case: Rosewill Thor v2

Jup mate don't worry if even the 680i's will do P35 and later chipsets will surely support Penryn

Sure! That is until the 1300 pin series ships with an IMC. Then Sc-775 will only support the celeron versions of the Nehalem.

I see some 975 boards on that list. Would be nice if my AW9-D Max would run a Penry.
