    Gigabyte now developing DDR2 X48

Sources in Gigabyte told us today that gigabyte are not going for DDR3 X48. They are now focus on developing DDR2 X48.

We know that in the planning stage, Intel want all X38 and X48 only support DDR3. Because of the pressure from consumers and manufacturers, Intel finally let X38 support DDR2, but X48 remains unsupported.

Let's hope gigabyte's unilateral action will finally success.

BTW, Abit saids they won't gonna have DDR3 X38, All their X38 supports DDR2.

not surprising mobo makers are making a stand, they don't have huge amounts of resources like Intel, they can't keep designing, testing, producing so many motherboards all the time

Looking at how big DDR2 market still is and how cheap it's to produce I'm not suprised. DDR2 prices are just amazing atm.

This is bad news considering t will slowodown early DDR3 adoption and hence prices will be higher for longer periods of time (although probably not by much)

The lower preasure for consumers who don't have to buy DDR3 for using the new X38 and X48 should cause falling prices at DDR3 memory, or ?

Good nobody wants to buy DDR3 right now.

Of course when Nehalem comes, you'll know who will be shoving it down our throats...

The problem is that high-capacity kits are too damned expensive. I'm not spending above $60/gigabyte for same-speed DDR3. The truth is we don't have $500 for 2GB of RAM.

Yep. There is only one 2x2GB kit available right now from Crucial, and it's $800 I don't ever remember having to pay that much for DDR2...

When you can get 4x1GB of a quality ram for under $100 AR and when you can't even get a stick of 1GB DDR3 at that price, you know you not many will adopt DDR3.

keep in mind that the x38/48 are the extreme series chipsets. The performance with DDR2 will be lacking. DDR2 was an afterthought on the chipset so really don't expect much over what the P35 can do.

I think the decision here is much much more for the marketing side then for actual capabilities. They are bringing ddr2 to the chipset because of all the speculative performance that people feel the chipset will give when in reality the real gain wont show unless you are using DDR3. The only thing that we win here is a platform that has 2X16 crossfire and ddr2.

DDR3 is just as fast as DDR2, so there really is no reason to buy it.

maybe not for average users but xtreme users who want max and can afford it it is faster

DDR2 vs DDR3 - ASUS Blitz Formula vs Blitz Extreme

as for me i won't be upgrading until ddr3 is reasonable. also glad some manufacturers are still pushing for ddr2

I'll go DDR3 when it hits at least 1600 speed and 80$ per gigabyte.
So Nehalem it is I guess... It's better that way anyway...

Yeah, there will be a new socket for Nehalem so that should warrant the upgrade to DDR3.

Of course if any of us get Phenom, then who knows when DDR3 will be on AMD.

Well considering the average gamer wouldnt notice the performance difference between single & dual channel ram in a conroe system, i dont think DDR3 will revolutionise anything.

Also i thought the desktop version of nehalem wasn't going to use its IMC, instead using the usual NB/SB setup?
