This board has been the best I have ever owned until a couple days ago when out of the blue it froze with a bad checksum error. The mouse and keyboard lights went out but the system and fans kept running but I received no error beeps at all. It said bad checksum, keyboard not found, checking boot from cdrom, cdrom not found, and then froze. It would not let me into the BIOS. This would happen every time the system was turned on. I did the standard stuff like clearing the CMOS by jumper, taking battery out, booting from Linux image, booting from floppy, disconnecting all hardware but main components, nothing worked. The next morning after leaving the battery out all night it acted like it was going to post but stuck at hardware detection and still wouldn't let me into the BIOS setup. It is on it's way back to Asus now.
If you are considering getting this board then I would think hard. Asus support was really hard to get a hold of. They will not be able to replace the board if it is not reparable because its status is discontinued with no more stock available. I have been slacking in the backup department so because of my raid setups for storage and the OS I needed the same board. I ended up ordering another one from Newegg. I didn't get the open box because it only has a fifteen day return policy and the odds of DOA are high. I figure that if the RMA board is repairable then I can return the new one with plenty of time. If it's not repairable then I needed the same board anyhow to have a sure way to save all my data. Hopefully it is not reparable and they upgrade me to the striker extreme. If that is out of stock then who knows because I need an Sli board. Thats my little story about a giant headache.
