i am almost tempted to purchase this board but after my last .... i'll wait for the Abit max ver to come out
My experience is not quite so bad , though i don't have fond memories of the ROG Commando.

What may be ok here though is the board appears to originate from taiwan, not , like the commando & strider, china. The talk of quality issues with boards seems to hang over the china plant which i believe was new at the start of the year.

see pic 3rd from bottom Asus Maximus Formula SE X38 - Living Review

must admit i like the crazy, high & normal voltage indicators

I'm torn this or abit IX38 QuadGT supposedly next week ??

Let's make sure we post up links, on any official reviews that we find on the net.

When you run this board on water, I wonder how well the heat pipe disperses the cooling to the other chips it connects to?

I also would like to know if some other water block would fit where the Fusion is, but is looking for a 1/2" hose.

From all the reviews I have read, they are both pretty much on par with one another.

Gonna come down to personal preference I guess as both boards have unique features that separate them well from one another, but offering similar performance.

I am confused on the memory for this board: (Newbie)

    It has for info:
    Dual channel memory architecture
    4 X DIMM, supportmax 8GB, DDR2-1200*/1066/800/667 MHz, ECC, non-ECC and unbuffered memory
    DDR2 1200 is O.C. speeds.

So if I want to buy Crucial 4GB kit (2GBx2) what memory kit is best?

Here is one that I am looking at:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2KIT25664AA53E

    and another:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2KIT25664AA667

Are these the type I need the the Maximus SE, what is the best Crucial 4GB kit (2GBx2) that I can select, that the board could actually make use of on a high memory OC?

    Thanks for the help...

I want to get my memory on order for this baby....

*Update: I noticed the top link is Cas Latency: 4, the second is Cas Latency: 5, but the same price? Isn't that odd?

    I guess the top link 'DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) CT2KIT25664AA53E' would be a good choice correct?

My issue with the DQ6 wasnt performance, it hated 4x1gb of my micron d9gmh, one pair from crucial ballistix, and another pair from g.skill hz, both pairs do 550mhz easy with 5-5-5-12 timings, but put them together, and they barely will do 450............stock settings i was getting bsod's with 4gbs...............there is no way i am running with 2gb's again, 64 bit vista takes up 800megs on idle

Your first link would be a TERRIBLE choice for wanting to overclock. Since its speed is DDR2-533, you may get up to 667 speeds, or even close to DDR2-800 speeds, but I'd doubt that....since that stuff you linked to is essentially value memory and not performance memory.

You need some memory rated at DDR2-800 (PC 6400) minimum, DDR2-1066 (PC 8500...?) would be very much preferrable. A good set of Micron-based D9 chips would be nice to find, too.

    Link to Some Mushkin 2 x 2GB DDR2-800.

Some other companies make better choices than what you had.....OCZ, Corsair, Crucial even.

Problems with memory now really gone Flashed back to bios 0401 and can run all dividers and boot with high FSB again. I think bios 0504 was the actual problem.

to buy or not to buy

I've been waiting for / watching this mobo for a while now, ok so I was suckered in by the WaterCoolable chipset design.. but I have other reasons for wanting it and I just wanna know whether its worth it for me

    • I heard they will phase the Special Edition out so needs to be bought now.
    • I received £250 for my bday to buy summit for my computer (either WC or new mobo).
    • I have DDR 1066 which only runs at 800Mhz (O/C on 1:1) on my current 975xbx2.
    • I'll get my WC parts eventually no matter what.
    • I currently have an ageing x1900xt - I might get 2 x ATI HD2600 512MB and put them in true 16x16 crossfire (I game at 1600x1200, 1920x1200 resolution)
      OR
    • When new GPU's come out I can use them in real crossfire
    • I can upgrade to the new CPU's with this mobo
    • I'll only buy DDR3 when it costs around £200 for DDR3@1600Mhz (so a while yet!)

Is it worth my while upgrading? Considering I have only one main PC so will have to take my current set up apart (not so bad cos then I can do a fresh O/S install)

Any thoughts on my reasons would be greatly appreciated!! I mean is the true 16x16 PCIE any good? Any idea when the Abit x38 comes out? are Abit any good?!? I have mixed feelings on Asus with various hits and misses (but hell, even my INTEL xbx2 isnt perfect; destroying 3 sets of memory in slots 1+3)

With me quad max FSB was 467. This is the only board ive used it on so not sure if its max cpu. Also that was with bios 0504 which doesnt work good for me. I wil test the quad tonight in a Blitz to see if max FSB is higher in that board. After that ill test max FSB again in Maximus but with bios 0401.

Me E6600 does 550mhz on air but havent tried increasing PLL volts. The cpu did 550 air on me P5B, Commando and P35C as wel.

Ran 4 sticks just to see if it would run. No serieus OC. Wil try that later.

noway if you are running with a g0 you shouldn't hit a wall yet, push it further

Then you only have a FSB of something like 380 unless you run lower multi....

That was a push in the right direction for me. I still am looking, and found these: Kingston HyperX 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...erX-_-20104001

With this review I spotted: http://techgage.com/article/mushkin_4gb_xp2-8500/1

If I am set on 4GB taking 2 slots, would this be a good selection, or could someone put my nose on a better one? (I will be running Vista 64bit)

Note: I can't find where it is listed, that this is unbuffered memory.

Thanks again. (I want my Maximus SE happy with his ram!)

sorry i should of given the reason for my impression of the P5E, my last board was a P5W DH Deluxe v1.0 and i was limited with my quad to 3.15 completely stable. i could do 3.6 24/7 on the same board with an e6600.
so when i found i was able to boot up @ 3.25 i was v.happy. i havnt had much time to overclock but in the few hours i spent studying the bios settings i managed to hit 3.4 stable easily. i'm sure this chip will go far higher on this board so imo its brilliant....
