What I have learned is that crunching is a little like putting money in a 401K. Day to day, it may seem like the account is not growing. But over time, it begins to add up. I have an older quad-core that I've run at 3.2GHz for almost a year. Its daily output is respectable. Nothing worth bragging about. Over time, it's generated more than three million points (probably closer to four million by now). This is why it's important to just keep at it. With my daily output I'm not going to blow by people anymore. But I've made it into the top 100 and hope to keep moving up, not so much for my ego, but for the benefit of the team. This is not the 100 meter dash. It's more like a marathon race. The people who persevere will ultimately win.
Oh, I should also mention that quad-core has been running non-stop for a year on a P5B-Dlx, the board that some people think is crap. If you set up a system right and not try to make it do things it was never meant to do, it's amazing how durable hardware can be.
