Since OEM's like Zippy/Seasonic/Etasis etc, put out much higher quality PSU's.


On a 2500 dollar gaming computer... I would expect a good PSU.



If FSP unit was in a 250 dollar computer, I wouldnt catagorize the PSU as junk.

Also, they can't have modded the drivers, as that would mean compatibility could be broken with new driver releases. so I guess that means... *anyone got a PLCC extractor handy?*

It's a standard striker and voodoo/hp got asus and ati to make it work, and all the hardware is off the shelf parts (other then the case of course).

You must've missed the fact that FSP has actually started to pay more attention to the retail market and been marking some very nice high-end PSUs for some time now.
The Blue Storm series for once is of very nice quality and comes at a surprisingly low price.
It's not junk even when you compare them to the very nice PSUs made by e.g. Zippy. FSP is the world's largest PSU manufacturer, they have the skills to make to make really good PSUs.

Except the HP looks to be much more upgradeable. Dell uses a BTX mobo layout and a variety of proprietary mobo connectors so you can't swap in a new retail board. Also, the Dell bios provides no overclocking or tuning adjustments other than a choice of multipliers. The HP OTOH seems like it will have the full Asus Striker bios.

Definitely not for the majority of this site's members, but as the offspring of HP/Voodoo, it could have been much worse. If a casemodder here built something like this, we'd be giving him some serious props. HP might do well to make the case available seperately (sexy hard drive enclosures included ), although they'd probably be more concerned about diluting novelty of the product.

And as far as the Dell system is concerned, if someone on this site went to the trouble of using sub-ambient cooling on their quad core, got it up to 3.46 GHz, and then said "That's it, that's the final product"... at the very least, we'd be a little disappointed.

Yeah in terms of performance and a far less restrictive bios, as well as the use of standard parts you can replace as you see fit over time, the HP beats Dell silly.

Concerns:
for air cooled gpu's I don't the the airflow is good enough for them
the hd's also look a bit less than adequately cooled


It's a great start however, far better than Dell's first models. And HP has the wisdom to use parts we can recognize as at least being minimum enthusiast grade rather than hiding the makers. The floating design is nice, but I'd have made YL's standard and improved the active airflow somewhat.

Very good first shot though. I'm assuming price will get better as they get better at doing this. For now it's just a premier showcase piece rather than made for the masses.

Though CNET reviews are generalized, they are good for mass consumer products like dig cams, gps units, etc. Nonetheless, the CNET Blackbird review is pretty impressive.
