Nautilus 500 is a fine WC setup

That statement is just not true. I have a Q6600 OC'd to 3 GHz

My temps were 54-55 on load Prime 95.

I modded the radiator and put in a Danger Den Black Ice Pro and it dropped load temps t0 44-48.

    The Nautilus has some benefits:

    1) no mess
    2) reliable
    3) decent WC (not extreme) but for $150 bucks its not bad.

    Plus its moddable.

    I read in asus website, P5wDH only supports DDr2 800, could I use DD2 1066 (Crucial Ballistix 2X1024 PC2 8500 Bus 1066MHz), does this mainboard support it?

My board won't run ddr2-1066 whatever I try. I know that some do and some don't so you have to take a gamble. You can always run lower speed and tighten the timings though remember.

Thx Lawrywild, sad news for me.... do you have Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500 and P5w, what timing and memory voltage do you use for it?

This is the best for me too... As soon as I go to 400fsb it is just to unstable no matter what voltage settings. Although I choose to run it @ 380 FSB for more stablility and less vcore...

yeh but you got a b3 stepping and overall their general overclock tends to be 3,4ghz thats good for a b3

If you tell me how to check i will gladely do so and im using 2301. My fsb voltage is maxed at 1.5v and mch at 1.75v need to check this again will confirm but its definetly rock solid stable. but if i got higher its not working it just reboots when it shows windows screen at 400x9 i tried 1.5v still no go.
Thanks for that. You've done well. I seem to have my P5K-E/Wifi stable now with Q6600 G0 at 3.6Ghz using 1.4875 vcore in bios and Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme cooler. The rest of the bios settings for motherboard voltages are left at AUTO which is nice. So I think I'll stick with P5K-E now and sell my P5WDH. Thanks again.

Did you enable SPD Ram Timings in BIOS? Don't manually set your ram timings and see if that helps. I know it sucks, but thats one of the trade offs with this board.

Well I know setting the ram timmings will hlp but it is a trade off and I would rather have my timings set manual as Everest shows me a better benchmark ecen though my core clock is not as high..

Hi folks, I bought this motherboard last week as part of my long overdue PC build (well last month... but the first two boards were faulty - bad luck hey). I'd be really grateful if someone could assist with my questions. I'll be sure to show my thanks.

    Firstly:

What could this PCI device be? I've installed the Intel chipset drivers V7221006; and although I don't use Asus Booster or Probe (Motherboard Monitor's much better) I installed the ACPI driver. The onboard sound (and for that matter the serial port and JMicron stuff, I only use 1 IDE drive) are successfully disabled in the BIOS, v2004, and thus I haven't installed their drivers. My PCI cards are a soundcard and TV card which are installed and work fine. Windows doesn't know what the device is. I'm sure at some point - probably with the first board I had - I got rid of this problem early on.

Secondly, I have a query about temperatures and sensors. The read from the program CoreTemp is 16-17C higher than the motherboard CPU sensor. So apart from going down the route of installing my own sensors, since that's a large difference how then do I know the motherboard's second sensor is even accurate? Currently, using a Zalman Reserator for the CPU, northbridge and graphics card my CPU at idle is 44C (well 27C if I believed the motherboard sensor), and the second sensor 53C (and my graphics card in the loop is 35C according to ATI's control center). I guess that's all okay if accurate, but since I can have little faith in the onboard sensor readings how do I know if the second sensor is under- or over-reporting? Have people reached a common consensus that the sensors report too low by x degrees? (E.g. x=-17 for CPU sensor.) I'd be quite unhappy if I discovered my 53C northbridge (if that's what it refers to) is something much higher. My Core2Duo 4400 2GHz is overclocked to 3Ghz without even trying, which is quite satisfying. At some point I'l learn about other overclocking parameters such as voltages and see if I can get more out of it.

Next, maybe someone could advise me on whether my PC is safe not running any fans? I.e. since the CPU, northbridge and GPU have their heat cooled out of the case, is it okay there's nothing actively cooling anything else in the PC? My hunch is it's oky, since the PSU - an Antec Phantom 500 - only spins its temperature-controlled fan once in a blue moon. My single hard disc reports 41C (in a very hot GUP Japan Smart Drive 2002C), it's an Antec P180 case, one DVD drive, RAM 2x2GB PC2-6400 and my 2 PCI cards. I hope I won't need the fans since I use the PC close to where I record my music. The soutbridge heatsink is only warm and I removed it, cleaned it then reseated it with Arctic Silver5, removing the cover logo. But since the Asus heatpipe thing is removed due to the Reserator, does that mean the part of the motherboard it was stuck to near the top of the board is now missing some cooling? Or maybe even the onboard wifi card wants some?

My final query is about maxing out the CPU. I ran Prime95 among other things to check my overclock was stable (it was and never got hotter than 59C). But never did the CPU usage in Windows Task manager read more than 50%. What can I use to get 99-100% activity? Edit: it's okay, I found http://sp2004.fre3.com/beta/beta2.htm. 100% usage only adds 2C to the 59C.

    Many thanks.

i am thinking that the device with the "?" is either something U download from asus website for some acpi driver device or has to do with your onboard soundcard.

I know that there has been a few times that I've come across that while reinstalling XP on my 2nd PC & I have to go to Asus website to get the download for that driver...

After that, it worked fine... Although I'm still unsure of what it does...

However, since U have said U use a PCI souncard. then it looks to me that U need to download the device driver from the website... Will try to find more details of it & post it..

    edit 1:
I prolly would try to install at least 1. 120mm fan either at the front or at the back to improve airflow for components that tend to get hot like the mosfets & stuff when running with WC...

Also would tend to more believe coretemp than the onboard sensors as the onboard sensors use the mobo readings whereas coretemp uses the cpu die for readings (if I'm correct... pls correct me if I'm wrong)..

Please help me out, ever since I installed my os onto the Seagate 320GB SATA drive, I discover a problem with the quick power off function. After I wake my computer up from sleep mode/stand by mode, my 2x PATA storage hard drives which were connected via JMicron IDE port (the one near the lowest pci slot) would disappear from "My Computer" menu, only my SATA Seagate 320GB remain avaliable for access...

I have contact Asus tech support about it, and they only respond me saying "This is going to point to a hardware failure of the J-Micron controller on the motherboard." Could this be related to the BIO settings instead??? I am using Q6600 G0 with 2206 BIO, 320GB SATA (OS), 160GB PATA (storage), 250GB PATA (storage), DL-DVD burner connected via the other IDE port

alexlyc, this is a Jmicron driver issue and it's needed for the P5W if you use S3 else Win XP will choke and complain of missing devices on S3 resume. Look back at my past posts in this thread to solve this.

Funny thing is that other C2D mobos (Commando, GA-P35C) I have tried did not require specific Jmicron drivers for S3 resume to work properly. Maybe the BIOS plays a part here too, P5W BIOS just isn't the nicest around so far- would be a much greater o'cing mobo if it has independent Vcore and EIST/C1E options.

    You are welcome.

Maybe the technical, marketing and aftersales support guys are not on talking terms. After all, the Asus manual also proclaims that the JMicron doesn't support ATAPI devices but it actually does and does it very well, in fact.

Thanks Miniboy for your reply (and g'day to you in Melbourne!).

I have already installed the ACPI driver (I reckon, since Asus Probe needs it, it's something to do with allowing OS applications to interact with the fans speed or something). If I attempt to install it again a DOS-looking window flashes up and disappears too quick to read. So I'm still stuck. I wonder if anyone has had this prob when they know the onboard sound is disabled already?

What is (or are) mosfets that you mention?

And have you - or anyone - come to a consensus as to how accurate the second motherboard temperature sensor is, since we know the CPU one is crap?

    Cheers again.

Hey Maxclipper, I disabled the JMicron IDE controller because it stops Acronis True Image working from outside Windows (i.e. restoring); True Image stalls.
