Vmch = voltage of memory controller hub, basically it supports the mem and vid buses, ie. lets cpu, mem, vid communicate. Yeah check your nb temps, I try and keep below 60C. Unless you have stability issues you don’t need to mess with it.

i have issues yes, above 500fsb...but i don´t know what value to put there(without the risk of killing it), and i don´t know how to check the temp...

Try 1.4v first. Any temp monitoring program will tell you the nb temp, like asus probe, speedfan etc.

Vascorama - You cant trust bios you need to measure it with a dmm. 1.375v is intel's rated absolute maximum. I had to hard-mod my board i have no bios option for vMCH on my rev 1.03G.

Im trying to decide if i should go over the rated absolute maximum for P965.... i have seen people running ~1.87v on the P965 with stock passive heatsink one guy with a DS3 burnt his NB at that voltage it was at 120*C PC locked & never posted again. (The DS3 1.55v setting = 1.87v real).
Thing is i raised it from 1.29v to 1.36v & cannot raise FSB any more, and +0.07 volts should have let me go up a bit if my chip could do it. I can however run static read on "faster" @ 490 FSB, which it wouldnt post at before mod.

I have been doing some 4:5 divider testing and am quite surprised @ 1.44 vNB i got 460 FSB and at 1.51 vNB i got 470 FSB. Theres still more in it, these boards are fun

too bad my cpu multi is 7, if it was 9...my cpu would be around 4600mhz(if he could make it of course), at 460 fsb, it´s rock stable(orthos 8 hours, vcore @1.365 bios/1.320 cpu-z..), it´s a great board yes, but for those with high cpu multi´s...or unlocked

Off the record, I changed my board for a P5B Premium Vista Ed. Much better overclocker than my old P5B. (which was pictured on the first post) The P5B really didn't liked my OCZ Memory.

My vanilla is better than both deluxe I had (and killed) for FSB. Just comes to luck I think.

I have seen P5B Deluxe's max out under 500 FSB, and not be able to do 460 FSB with the 4:5 divider. My vanilla is challenging Deluxe's, Commando, P965-S, AB-9 and DQ6 results.

haven´t tested yet, my cpu is E6550(1333, multi 7) so in order to use 4:5 i needed other ram that my own(gskill pk).
I´m thinking in changing to a p5kc to see if i can clock my cpu higher, low multis suck a lot

the e6600 is probably best for you if you can afford to pay that bit more. The e6300 can hit 3GHz + but you need nice ram to go with it. e6320 are nice due to extra cache, but again the ram would probably be your limiter.
With the 6600 you may hit ~3.6GHz, (9 x 400) and with the ram at 1:1 it would be running at 800 MHz. My 2c.

PS -- Good start with system, try running the ram closer to 1:1 (lower its divider & speed) and wind up the cpu it should do much more than that

Thanks for the help a few weeks back Timbosan. I have recently changed from Prescott 3.0 to E6600. What a difference! Anyway, I have been changing things around with pretty good results although I am not exactly sure what I am doing

I have a few questions:
1. What reading on Coretemp or Speedfan tells the northbridge temp? I hesitate to go farther without knowing as the heatsink on the northbridge on my P5B Vanilla is cheep.

2. I haven´t changed the voltage on ram yet because I don´t really understand it. It is set on auto. I have slowly been lowering the voltage on the CPU VCore to lower temps. What else can I try?

There is no temp sensor for the NB but its fine on stock volts anyway no matter what speed. If your concerned, put a 40mm fan on the stock NB heatsink.
Suggestions - Give the cpu ~1.35v and go for 400 - 450 FSB. If your at 3.2 @ 1.22v vcore i think 3.4 - 3.6 is maybe possible with a bit more vcore. Your ram is good for 800 - 900 MHz. Try this:

FSB = 401
Ram divider = 1:1 (at 401 FSB ram will be DDR 802 MHz) -- choose lowest ram speed choice in bios
Vcore = 1.35v (real idle in windows)
Ram = 5-5-5-15
Vdimm = 2.1v
PCI - E Frequency = 100MHz
PCI frequency = 33 MHz

FSB = 375
Vcore = 1.34 idle in windows and drops to 1.29 with orthos under full load (set much higher in BIOS) Why does it drop so much?
Vdimm I am not sure what this is? Is this the ram voltage? I don´t think mine is suppose to go above 1.9v When I put it above this it turns red. I am not sure.
PCI - E Frequency = 100MHz
PCI frequency = 33 MHz

Temps go to 61 C after a while under load with orthos. Is this ok?

2.1v is fine, dont mind the red. I try and keep orthos load below 65C personally so I would say 61C is ok.

The board undervolts and droops, this is why many do vmods to vanilla.

yeah vdimm is ram voltage, i use about 2.1v on all ram, the red is pretty much just to let you know you've gone over standard.

Try this:

vcore = 1.35 - 1.40v
set 401 FSB
RAM timing = 5-5-5-15-6-42-10-10-10-15 (down the page)
Vdimm = 2.1v

thnx, but I only ran the 1.52 vCore to test the max. o/c. I had SpeedStep and C1E enabled to reduce temps. I set the bios vCore to 1.70v, I think, but with vDroop?...probably some glitch there. It was idling in the low 50's, so load would be 65C. For everyday use I'm down to 450FSB x 7 with 1.31v Core, and 1.90v Dimm @ 4-4-4-10. It runs pretty cool at that voltage. I used to run it at 470FSB with 1.31v, but it was not 100% stable. I set the voltage to 1.375v in the bios which shows as 1.315v in Windows. That is the maximum I would use for prolonged use, although Intels says you can go to 1.3875v, I believe.

ok thats a nice chip youve got. I run 1.376v/1.384v (idle/load) and the temps never go over 58*C full load in ~25*C ambient. 1.31v is under rated voltage (1.35v written on the cpu box) so you can go higher mate - I think <1.48v is ok long term using air cooling. Intel say 1.5v max nominal (safe maximum), 1.55 absolute max.
It looks like your cpu is very similar to mine :P

Hi:
I have been trying a combination of these settings over the past week. Normally I can boot with no problem but when I run Orthos, the system will reboot after a while. The temps for the cores are normal, but I I get around 71 C after a while for CPU (not cores). This reading has always been high, even when I had a prescott processor in this board a few months ago. I think something gets too hot (northbridge or ram but I don´t have sensors for them) and causing it to reboot.

I have 1 120 fan coming in and 2 120 fans going out. Room temp about 21 C

Any thoughts?

have you done the pencil droop mod? It takes 5 min, you can do it in the case, and makes so much difference.
Rebooting could be cpu - give it 1.4 - 1.45v (real load).
To check temps of NB etc, use your finger Pain threshold for human skin is ~42 - 45*C so if you can leave your finger on the HS ok its under ~42*C, hot after a few secs is ~45 - 55*C and so hot you pull away straight away is 60*C+.
I doubt its your NB causing the reboots mine was fine at stock volts, stock HS no fan at 490 FSB.

I would like to try it but the description I read here is for P5B deluxe and I have the vanilla.

About the instability, i'd guess its cpu give it a little more voltage than what it is at & re-test
