DX 10.1 will not require a new video card

Microsoft's Sam Glassenberg told Next-Gen in a phone interview, "DX10.1 fully supports DX10 hardware. No hardware support is being removed....It's strictly a superset. It's basically an update to DX10 that extends the hardware functionality slightly."

He said that the update is similar to what Microsoft did with DX9. "We did make updates to [DX9] that extended the supported feature set.

"All the hardware is still supported, all the games still run, all the features are still there, we've just simply extended the feature set and the lifetime of the API," he said...

Glassenberg conceded that "There will be new features [with DX10.1], and those features may be exposed on new hardware, but this is similar to the model that we had with DX9...[except] with DX10.1, we're saying [to developers], 'if you want to support the new features, you have to support all of them [including original DX10 features].'"...

Even though DX10.1 will support current DX10 graphics hardware, today's DX10 hardware will not be able to support all of the features of DX10.1, which includes incremental improvements to 3D rendering quality....

Glassenberg also addressed rumors that DX10--currently exclusive to Vista--would be coming to Microsoft's Windows XP. It seems that DX10's Vista exclusivity is unlikely to change.

At least they are putting an end to the hemorrhaging of the PC gaming market. Lets see how things develop from here.

Well would not make any sense if DX10 card owners had to upgrade once more.

According to this article dx 10.1 does require a new videocard. It's basically saying you can install dx 10.1, you just won't be able to use all the features. Well I can take a geforce 2, and install dx 10.1, I don't see the difference.

Indeed. The title of this thread is extremely misleading.

It depends on which sense it is misleading, as long as DX10 owners have at least some 10.1 features support. I do not see this as a misleading news but then in a sense it is misleading. This is really confusing and annoying.

For those of you having a hard time comprehending this thread lets break it down a bit further.
DX10.1 does not require a new DX10.1 video card
However, a DX10.1 video card is recommended if you want to support all of the features of DX10.1, which includes incremental improvements to 3D rendering quality, etc, etc.

    The key words here is:

I didn't find this word per say, however it's implied if you

    think DX9b and DX9C

you could get pretty much everything out of a DX9b card that you could out of a C card.

Ok the thread now makes perfect sense.

New question: Do G92 and R700 fully support DX10.1 or will we be waiting until a later card? (sorry if this has been answered elsewhere) Furthermore, how long will we have to wait before seeing games that make use of these features

Funny, all the people throwing a hissy over 10.1. Who the hell thinks that all those 10.1 features are going to be needed RIGHT NOW? We'll be lucky to see any need for the full 10.1 feature set in the next year and a half, let alone by the time R700 and G92 are out. I guess I don't see DX 10.1 being that big of a deal for a while to come.

ms is doing the same as she did with vista when she took out a lot of the os new features like the new fs and more to the "next os/sp.
this is because they always don't finish a product.

in dx case they had done the same and moved all of the features which failed to be complete on the dead line to dx10.1

dx10.1 is just an sp that shouldn't have happened.

    ...........oh well

So then technically, is does not require a new card. You can still install it and go on your way with your merry dx 10 cards, you just can't use all the features of 10.1, but most are still available.

current dx 10 cards don't look too promising for dx10 purposes, you'll probably want a geforce 9 or 10 by the time dx10.1 games come out

The high-end 6 series, the 7 series, and the X1k series?

As in, pretty much any DX9C compliant card that you'd have expected to turn up the settings on in the first place.
