it's really more of a question of which resistor to shade more than anything else. That said, there can still be variations in 1.03g and 1.04g, but from what I've found with 1.04g, maximum shading with #2 only yields 1.99vdimm actual. of course this can't be said of all boards, and not without a larger sample can we make ventures about the population.

at the very least, why don't you take a picture of the area in question.
    Hello Ziddey,
I'd like to do quick try with Vdroop before I put a 30K pot in... shade in resistor beside the one where you do the pot in parallel?? Wouldn't shading the resistor directly take the resistance down too much?

Also, Intel doc, and Asus support forum say something about normal behavior for Core 2 Duo to lower voltage as current increases... Isn't this just lack of inductors on mobo to compensate for the surges in current?

Specifically what exactly does this Vdroop mod do?? (and why would Asus not have done it that way to begin with?)

I recommend lower resistance pots. Anything over 10K is totally unnecessary for any of these mods IMO.

I tried 50K on memory.. the TINIEST turn on a linear on is a huge jump or drop. It's ridiculous. Use a 10K and you'll love yourself for it.

Personally I would be thrilled if I could get 3.2Ghz working on air with stock (or small increase) voltage.

I'm at 1.6V with Artic Freezer 7 pro struggling to get 3.08Ghz stable with E6420 (hoping Vdroop mod will fix all that).

Tonight, ripping damn NB off, and checking out what that thermal pad is doing... I really hope putting some good paste under there fixes all my fsb issues. Last result will be OCZ P4 Gladiator brick of copper on the NB... then its the doggy house (RMA/eBAY).
You have a dual. I had 500 FSB on my e6400 on the P5B easy... it's quads that are the issue with this board. I dumped this board for a P5K anyway. It's stable 200 MHz higher and at any given MHz is 10-15% faster in the apps I use.

Before I (attempt) to RMA this P5B, lets go over this one last time:

    me:
    - P5B 1.04G C2, E6420, Corsair 6400C4.
    - tried the latest three BIOS with 6x multi.
    - tried auto, lowest, highest and many combination of various voltage adjustment
    - replaced TIM with paste on NB, and added fan. Vdroop pencil mod too.
    - result is mobo temp is still 42C+, and cant get >380fsb stable (btw: 6x380 = 2280Mhz)

    forums:
    - various P5B revisions, 1.03G, 1.04G... various Allendale, Conroes
    - no special cooling, no special modification, stock board out of the box, people are hitting 450 fsb with ease right out of the box

I figure I either have fsb challenged Conroe, or its this P5B...
What would you do in my shoes?

you got a multimeter? read a few pages behind for how to find one, if one can be found.

yeah i do have a dmm. I saw the resistor you tried that resulted in a lower vdimm. What revision is your board cos mine looks different (its a 1.03G). When checking for continuity, do i have to have the power cord unplugged and discharge the psu (press power after unplugging the cord)? I have electronics experience, just want to check to make sure.

mine was 1.04g. i first found the resistor to lower, then the one to increase after i realized my mistake.

you can apply the same approach for the 1.03g

yeah, usually i pull the motherbaord out and have it on my desk since it's easier to probe. otherwise, unplug the psu and discharge

not 100% sure, but the the Vdroop penicl mod should be the same as for P5B deluxe. I tried it on my P5B 1.04G and it works pretty good.

shade the resistor at the bottom where the 50K POT is indicated.

i did the same way. as the P5B delux. a pencil stroke through the resistors. appearantly, it works for the p5b vanilla also. you should check out eva and her guide on doing it. thanks eva!. isn't hard. but if its your first time. it feels risky. hehe

hehe glad your pencil mod worked. hehe

I finished this mod and it works like a charm. vdroop is now 0.00035 or around there. but the only problem i have is when i set my vcore in bios (1.2225) -- it shows 1.18 on cpu-z and every other program (NOTE- THIS IS WITHOUT LOAD). so i have a vdroop already without load. hm.. dunno if that'll affect my system but it surely sucks.

Thats not droop, its real voltage undershooting the bios set value. droop specifically is the decrease from real idle vcore to real load vcore. you can shade it more to get no droop, or even 'positive' droop (increase under load).

    EG: i set 1.3500v i get 1.3376v idle and 1.344v load.

My real idle vcore undershoots the set value by 0.0124v
I have 'positive' droop as idle = 1.3376v
    load = 1.3440v

    See what i mean

oh well. my bios set value sucks. since i set it as 1.225 and it drops to 1.18. thats like 0.04 drop.-.-. i 0vcore change during idle and load

    Vdroop mod fix and comfirmed.

    Before Vdroop
    Bios set -1.225 => idle 1.18 => load 1.15

    After Vdroop mod. + fix
Bios set -1.225 => idle 1.2080(before i fixed, it appeared as 1.18) => load 1.2080(before fix it showed as 1.17)

    IDLE

    LOAD

If I could get 2.8Ghz on 1.2V and only 40-45C at load I'd be in heaven. Unfortunately, my E6420 requires default 1.35V to get there.

But, I'm wondering, if you're into silent HTPC kinda stuff, why would you do Vdroop mod. When the voltage was lower, so was the temperature too, wasn't it?

Actually, i havn't noticed any significant degree changes. except for like 1-2 C. but thats when i'm running games and such.

lol. its okay.. i'm on stock cooler now. i have a AC freezer sitting in front of me. i want to use it but i'm doing testing with the Stock first then AC. (hope you can get your E6420 higher buddy! )

and yeah. i'm into HTPC. i watch mvoies and i got myself. a projector to watch movies off my computer. i can bearly hear anything off my computer.

im a little confused...so i should follow deimos' picture and shade in the resistor at the bottom if i own a P5B vanilla? Bail W's pic looks like the deluxe with a different layout?

Edit: nevermind, I followed deimos' pic and it works, the pencil mod works like magic lol

This is the correct Pencil Vdroop mod. Shade the resistor circled in pink, labelled 'R3'
