Yes, the parts did go from -3 to -37 because -3 was no longer available. However, Mushkin tests and bins both parts the same and took the hit with lower yield but giving us the ability to provide a solution for the product(s). Mushkin has sent out reviews with both the -3 and the -37 chips.

is it possible to see what stick has what chips from a revision number or anything?

That's probably because trcd = 4 gives better performance than trcd =3 w/ p5B and 1066 strap.
