We've done that with a 1k PSU for this rig. The thing is still to loud, any less air flow and who knows how long the PSU will last.

Come on, I know you're a capable modder ( and benchmarker ).
Measure the amb. temp inside the PSU and the temp of critical components inside the PSU with a good IR Temp meter, and check what you can do with the silent fans, etc

btw, how silent do you want to make the system ?
