@davexl: what are you using to measure your power consumption and how much $$$ does it cost?
Power consumption by Power mate
(I have rented it for AUD $35 per week - it costs $300! I believe in the US you can buy a cheap thing called a Kill-a-watt for USD$30)
Ambient and case temperature monitoring by T-Balancer
Monitoring graphs by Samurize
Hair and makeup by my wife![]()

have my Quad core system up and running now. Just got a monster HS and some (hopefully) good fans with it, will install and setup over the weekend, will let you know how i get on, hopefully I won't hit an FSB wall on my Mobo too soon ( p5n32 -Sli premium !)

HI all. Just bought this CPU and doing some testing. I have been browsing the forum for some time and see people with vcore up to 1.5v on this chip but when I set my vcore in Bios to 1.365 or above it boots to the Welcome screen and reboots.Have only tried to 360 FSB @1.35v and core 2 fails Orthos in under a minute so I wanted to add more Vcore. From reading here my board is not the best for this chip but it certainly runs my E6600 at 1.5 vcore.
Chip=L631B120
Bios=2004
Vcore=1.35v
MCH=1.75v
Mem=2.3v @ 1-1 @ 4-4-3-10.
Speed step, C1 and usb legacy disabled.
All other settings are Auto I believe.
Any thoughts or suggestions on the Vcore would be aprreciated.
Hope I posted in the right thread.![]()

Anyone know of a wattage calculator for these quads? There used to be a good one online but that was pre-C2D.![]()

<----- REST IN PEACE, KIT. 1993-2007.
100c for quads, and 85c for duals. One thing you gotta remember, is cpu's can handle alot of heat before any kind of damage, core 2 duos can handle heat up to 90c on load and work just fine, i have had a overclocked E6600 that ran really hot even at stock speeds, but the cpu never had one issue, also gpu's are another example, these things can handle 100c and up and nothing will happen, so really you should not worry if your temps are above 80c, as long as there is good amount of air flow in your case/room.

I don't think this statement is true. Have a look at Intel's specs on the q6600: 62 °C. The 85, 100 you're thinking about are the constants used to calculate the internal temp based on the DTS reading inside the chip (core temp = constant - DTS), where the constants is either 85 for a C2D or 100 for a quad.
Is 1.625v-1.65v too high? I can do this in the mid 50s using my A/C in my watercooling loop but don't know if that's worth 3.5-3.6.

I keep speedstep on, and the computer isn't on 24/7. It gets used this much for about 4 hours a day straight, sometimes 6 scattered on and off.
I notice after 1.55-1.6v, higher voltage doesn't even make a difference. I guess my e6400 spoiled me.. there's no easy 1.6-1.8 Ghz overclock on this q6600.![]()

Now trying 9x381, 1.575v,1.579 actual. Hopefully this passes some orthos for me. 51c coretemp.
The water and the cpu seem to be fighting each other. It starts at 56-59, goes to 51, then to 55, then to 49. I'm rooting for the water.![]()

I think you have a serious cooling problem and I base that on my PC using the formula on the line in that post. In other words, if I use an x value (room temp) of 32 and apply it to the formula (which I fully acknowledge is extrapolation), I get a predicted average core temp of 70.3 °C which is nearly 11 °C than your current temps.
My suggestions:
1) Check that you have good case airflow/consider a better air cooling HS like the Ultra-120 eX
2) Drop your o/c to 9x333 and run your mem @ 1:1 -- 3.2 GHz vs. 3.0 Ghx is only 7 % less clock rate but MAY lower your over-the-red-line temps
3) Check to see if you can minimize your vcore; mine Q6600 will run 9x333 @ 1.3250v.
4) Consider lapping both your HS and IHS on your CPU. This gave me over 10 °C decrease in my hottest core and about 7 °C decrease in my coolest core:
Lapped my Q6600
Lapped my Ultra-120 Extreme
Both threads have pics and temp results.
i wanna lap both my cpu and heatsink but i have never lapped anything before and im scared lol .. but hell for a 10c drop .. it might be worth it
