Really good within certain boundries but can be overloaded by really heavy overclocks. I would recommend the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme over it though.

Temperature difference with the cpu at stock speeds is almost non-existant between these air-cooled TEC's and any of the better cpu coolers. They are noticably better at cooling with medium overclocks, however I suspect the gap is really small with the newest coolers like the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme and the TEC units always have more potential for failure and are more expensive and noisier. For really heavy overclocking the TEC units will reach a point where they are overloaded by the heat compared to the better cpu coolers and at that point they will become much inferior. The newest cpu coolers are good enough that I don't see any value in these TEC units which is why I finally took them off my list.

I know that. I think i have a killer cpu because I'm running on 3200mhz on 1.2vcore now, so i think 3.7 or something is no problem.

And does someone can anwser my question too, so which cooler I could take?

In all the benchmarks the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme comes out on top.
So if you want the best go with that.

I'm still asking the same question as you, but my budget is around $30.

Would that be better than Thermalright Ultra-90 (with a good fan)?

    i say, mod the ultra!

don't know, never tried the ultra. seriously though, ultra is still a push-pin so might as well bolt it in. ultra would ran you around $ 20 at svc. they also have a $6 bolt-through kit for it so you don't have to mod it yourself...

I was thinking of buying this $3 69CFM fan for it: http://svc.com/fba09a12u.html

Is it really necessary to buy the bolt through kit?
I thought the push-pin design was good enough.

Again, is it worth lapping the HS base and IHS?
And is the thermal paste that comes with the Ultra-90 good enough?

it's not necessary to use a bolt-through. it will help though - tighter contact, better temperatures. since you are planning to use a mid-range sink, every little bit will help. if you have some bolts and washers at home, just mod it yourself and save $6. if you have to buy some, it will probably run you just as much in a hardware store so might as well get it at svc and save on shipping.

you don't really need to lap anything unless one of the surfaces is uneven.

thermal paste should be ok. i'd go with something better but since you are on the budget, might as well use that for now.

that panny is a good fan but prepare yourself - it's going to be pretty loud. can't control it from bios - no rpm monitoring. so i hope you have a fan controller of some kind.

No fan controller, in your opinion would under 50 dba be loud?

How much of a performance difference is there between the thermal pastes?
I'd be willing to pay $5 for AS5 if I thought it would really help my temps.

could be 2-3 C's easy. still, i wouldn't worry about it now - the thermalright stuff isn't bad at all. make sure you read-up on the proper application though - arctic silver's site has a real nice guide.

above 40 dba is loud for me, not sure how you might handle that level of noise. they do have slower fans there for about the same price or even cheaper (svc-branded). on the other hand, the more rpm, the better it will cool. it's always a trade-off.

i'd get a slower fan (whatever's the cheapest) now and if that's not enough, later on you can always step up to a good 92x38 fan like delta tri-blade (they are real nice in terms of pressure and cfm-to-noise ratio).

Oh! I think you may be right. I only browsed it rather quickly and saw it was from a well established member and assumed it was competent. Ok, I'll take it down for now. It would confuse new people anyway.

There is another review of that heatsink in the same forum that is much better, IMO. Right near the top. Try that one.
