I could well be wrong (I don't see any benefit in it for my usage so I don't bother) but I think that you ideally needed to install in AHCI mode.

& yes, if you aren't using it just disable the JMicron in the BIOS.

That's what I was thinking as well so I deleted the partition and am trying to install a fresh copy of XP, but it's still not working. I updated my original post with more info, too. Thanks for the help

OK I'm an idiot. In the BIOS there was an option for SATA CDROM and ALSO for my Asus DVD-RW I changed it to the Asus and it works now. But I get a BSOD while setup is loading drivers...

Well I fixed the BSOD by slipstreaming the SATA drivers for the 965 chipset onto an XP CD, but now the install thinks I have an upgrade version of XP and won't let me continue until I insert a full version. Any idea what could be causing this?

try to do the whole installation using an IDE dvd, i kinda had the same problem with a BADAXE2 so i used an IDE DVD and everything went smooth , them switch back to ur SATA DVD

I don't really want to install as IDE and then change to AHCI, I don't think it's recommended. I had the exact same problem on my Bad Axe 2, but after I combined the SATA drivers onto an XP install CD it worked fine.

Thanks for the link gunit, but I don't have XP installed anymore. I deleted the partition (I know, smart right?) so I'm working with a blank HD now.

I combined the ICH8R SATA drivers onto an XP CD but I'm still getting the same error. Dunno what to do now...

So far with a new QuadGT and a 6700 with OCZ 8500 DDR2 2x1GB I have booted into Vista at 510x7 but not orthos stable. I haven't tried over 510 as I am looking for stability. I did 500x6 orthos stable for 15 hours at 1.45 Vcore but thats too slow CPU speed for me. 500x7 was also not orthos blend stable. I may get it stable in the 480s at 7 multi but I will have to test. It looks like 8 multi and mid 450s FSB is where I will wind up.

I have posted at 510x8 on air which is unstable.

Right now I am testing at 445x8 so far orthos stable 30 min and counting as I type this. Once I get cpu stable then I will tighten ram as I think this ram can do a lot. Maybe I will try more then 1:1 as I have read people taking it over 1100 but we shall see. I think I would rather have really tight timings on 1:1 then looser timings at higher freq.

Heres my main problem. The PWM's are really hot. My temps at load are hovering at 120C according to Uguru. Thats the middle ones, the ones on the edges are 20C cooler. I don't think I made a good choice with the Copper sinks. If I wasn't lazy I would add a fan to them but there lies the problem with the Titan Amanda. Anytime you need to remove it, its like re-building your entire system as the Mother board has to come off the tray

I have a Silverstone TJ09 case with 2 fans as exhaust at the top. I may turn the one closest to the mosfets around and see if that helps even though its not exactly right on them. When I get a stable OC I will post some screens

Well reversing the 120 fan at the top did some good. The load temps for the 3 middle PWMs went down 10c-12c to 110C-108c and the outer two to 85C. Still not good and probably limiting me but o well.

I also just ordered a 40mm and 60mm fan from newegg. I will find a way to get one of them on or near the PWM sinks

Finally got my TR Ultra-120 Extreme in for my QX6700, and so I'm getting around to overclockign and installing. I recall reading a conversation regarding turning down fan speed if you use regular fans and don't plug it into the CPU (which is a four-pin pwm connector). I looked through the bios but can't seem to find this. Is it hidden or do I need uguru/speedfan or similar installed?

Also, in everyone's opinion which is the best temp monitor while in Vista?

I get different temp readings when using latest Uguru in Vista and Core Temp 0.95. Uguru reports always about 10C cooler then Core Temp. Don't know which is accurate. Anybody know which is the more accurate reading?

Eeks 120... I was thinking about picking some of the Switech coolers up but now I dunno. I already have a HR-05 and HR-05 SLI, one of which I want to use on the NB, so I'll need something for the PWM.

O well I decided I could not live with those pwm temps even if I was orthos stable at 503x7 on my 6700. 120c and it sometimes got to 127c which is beyond the 120 limit so I took it all apart and removed the amanda and will start over.

I noticed that those adhesive pads stink. The BGA sinks had moved some and the middle 2 pwms were peeking out just a little. No wonder the high temps! First I removed the thermal pads on the BGA sinks. I then used a good deal of Artic Alumina Adhesive to secure them with good contact on those little pain in the ass PWMs. Then I secured a 60mm vantec stealth fan on top blowing on the sinks. Thats as far as I got tonight. Probably won't have it all back and running till Saterday or Sunday. One new thing I will try is the Amanda Titan Nano Grease for the CPU. I just noticed in the aircooling thread that it got rated higher then AS5. I am curious to see how it performs.

tryed several versions of set fsb and clockgen

try clearing cmos and see if uguru works after that
i have to do that on a regular bases to keep uguru working.....
if i mess to much with my board it starts tripping....giving wrong alarms and freezing the sistem .....even without messing with fsb...the simple change for the fan control is enough to crash my sistem

I had big problems with the stock PWM-cooler and the temps on the middle ones. One suggestion is to make sure your board is flat. It often tends to bend a little when seating the CPU-cooler...

Well here is what I have gotten so far. With the Swiftech BGA sinks now firmly attached with artic alumina adhesive and the Vantec stealth epoxied over the eSata port so it hangs over the sinks my temps are 57C on the outer two at load and 60C for the inner three. I tried that Titan nano grease on the CPU that got the higher rating then the AS5 in the review posted in the WC section but it did me no good. Its just so hard to work with that it makes it very hard to properly put it on. My load temps with it went up 5-6C. So I put back good old AS5 and my temps are now 63C load running orthos blend @1.495 vcore in vista at 510x7 (3570) So not bad...I think I have more headroom now so I will see how high I can take this 6700

i am a ceramique user in PWM and the NB area...i left the SB alone except adding a 25MM fan.

where do you get a fan so small, is it helping?

This would be a nice guide, because its a big the pwn heat is a huge performance barrier for these boards.

I did it like this instead:

In that pic you could also see that the board is a little bit bent. I have fixed that now.

EDIT: The reason I did like that was that I wanted another cooler on the NB. The cooler on PWM seems ok if the board is flat and you have some kind of airflow to it (in my case the CPU-fan blow a little on it)
