I forgot to mention previously, I have them running via startup shortcuts. I don't suppose this makes any difference. There are four folding processes running, 2 x FAH504-Console.exe, and 2 x FahCore_78.exe, all attributed to my Windows username.

I'm fortunately safe there, but it's still a mystery as to where the CPU time was lost. I've sat here watching task manager, and the only CPU time being used is by the two instances of FahCore_78.exe.

I'm going to leave the system running for awhile, to see if it makes a difference now they are both set to low priority. If not, I have no idea what's going on.

Anyway, thanks for the help folks, it has been much apreciated.

    Windows SMP client

@mk5652, that is how it should be, two cores using all the CPU (and a lot of memory too) then the two consoles which don't seem to be doing much but they are managing the cores.

If I could just get my hands on a broken dual core s939 chip for dirt cheap I'd be all over that for the SMP client. I love getting busted CPUs and fixing them, cheap upgrades to my crunchers

How do you fix busted CPUs? Because I've got a few 165s that I could send you.

I repair broken pins Currently fold3 and fold7 have repaired CPUs (fold7's has 3 replaced pins, was a victim of getting ripped out of the socket). Catch is the broken pin(s) have to be on the outside row, I don't have a small enough iron to get in the middle.

If one of those opteron 165's is a victim of an outside-edge busted pin (or two, or three...), what would you want for it?

I just noticed, I'm hanging on to the top 20 crunchers of our team by the skin of my teeth, all these bright red guys keep shoving me down the list

    Read it and weep, Sparky

FYI, without going SMP, which I surely will soon, I should increase by average PPD by another 150 or so as I have just doubled HTPC's memory from 1GB to 2GB (also specified 2047 i/o 500 set once upon a time). On top of that, I've squeezed another 400MHz out of the poor D805

On the SMP front, something I read somewhere has put me off a little. 'Disconnecting your internet stops the client...', is this true? Also, can you tell me if it is appropriate to run the SMP client on HTPC, given that we watch avi's regularly on it (evenings) and my wife often steals the network connection when she works from home? I know it doesn't affect the normal client unless its trying to send or receive work.

Does adding memory really help that much? I've never seen a normal CPU client use more than a couple hundred MB... but if it does help then I'll dump more ram into the systems I've got!

When I ran the SMP client for a bit on the borrowed parts I used, I never saw it stop work when the internet connection died.

Re the memory thing, I should have added that the upgrade was from a 'slow single' 1GB stick to '2 faster' 1GB sticks. So the significance is really in going from single channel to dual channel DDR with tighter timings. And the extra 400MHz on the CPU, theoretically, adds 12.5% too.

My estimated 150ppd was based on the increase in Min PPD on the same project for the same instance i.e.,
    2611 (682pts) Min.Time 251.49 ppd is now 341.79 ppd (+90)
    2613 (755pts) Min.Time 205.00 ppd is now 262.40 ppd (+57)

As you can see, very rough basis for estimation as these proj. are average performers on this machine anyway. Different WUs, different results.

I'm also guessing that when HTPC is busy entertaining us, it'll have more reserves left to satisfy F@H and us

I might just throw more memory in a few of the systems since I have some spare 128MB sticks of PC133 around here. Who knows, it might do something... like an extra 2 PPD

    LOL

So, why aren't you using the SMP client, then?

I only have 1 dual core CPU in all of my crunchers, and that is my main rig. I found that on my rig the GPU client + a normal CPU client nets me about the same PPD. The GPU uploads 330 points worth every 11 hours though instead of the SMP client's 1500 points every day and a half (or however long it takes it).

Maybe the opty will go on? MAYBE?! Jimwah, there is no maybe it is it WILL be going back on!

I noticed our stats yesterday took a drop. Hopefully it'll be back up where it was again, though I think there are some who are going over to WCG for the may "whoop the admins" competition oh, and Angra's systems look to be in use again, his chart has a drop. Angra, tell those guys to stop using those computers, you need them for F@H After all, can't let mawsoccer push you down from being #1 on the team can you?

@Kaze, how many systems have you got running F@H now, and what specs? I'm curious... so I know whether to worry about more people coming for me later on!

Crap, somehow I managed to dent one of my caps on my mobo underneath my gfx card, and system instability is back now Good ol' ebay to the rescue though, found an exact replacement for it. And, I just got a rebate from paypal, so this new cap was essentially free. Just a hassle though.

*EDIT* And I just went through 2 restarts in a row

Bugger dude. Pisses you off, doesn't it? Pisses me off when hardware/software starts to fail out of the blue.

But hey, nevermind, just leave it off for while... like er... i was going to say 1.6 months, but given the lull in my WUs/submissions, you're off the radar again.

It isn't affecting my production much, it seems like it is mostly in games that it has trouble with the occasional windows reboot. So it is still crunching

Just the WU gods, I think.

A couple more WUs should be realised in the next hour or so and then I should have another reasonable fall of points later today. The major spike a few days back was due to Server dropping 1300 odd points on its 5-7day turn around

Ugh. I just got an error at 92% on a 250K step WU. Had to start a new one.

Check your overclock if you are at all. If you aren't, it could just be one of those random unstable WUs. You'll get partial credit though.
