    roberta-

it is always the luck of the draw... some older cpus do better, some newer ones do better.
you will never know unless it is one that has shown to be a great overclocker many times over....

I read older chips tend to be better overclockers is this true?
Being an OEM make any difference?
    Thanks

Got the different but older retail chip and it does 2800 no problem

Second that, mine 3800+ x2 does 2800 safely, but can go higher, even up to 2900mhz, but I don't think it's safe, I've even had it up to 3ghz, but then it instantly rebooted in windows after 30seconds or somewhat Just managed to get a cpu-z validator for it... check it out http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc?id=109050

alrighty x2 4800+ on the way

well the poll results clearly showed x2 4800+ as being the recommended proc over the 170 opteron so I went ahead and ordered one.

What stepping should I be looking for and what can I expect out of this chip when I get it?

Considering I have a totl watercooling setup going all estimates should take that into account.

I will be slapping this into an older neo2 platinum nforce3 pro board along with a gig of g-skill samsung tccd.

    any thoughts would be great.

If anyone else has one of these procs in this board what bios are you using and what configuration do you have your board at.

    Thanks in advance.

This should be a major kick in the ass for my aging 3500+!!!

I can't help but notice that your cpu actually is a 4800+ x2, mine's a 3800+ x2 and does as well as yours. It must be that mine wasn't tested as well as yours leaving the factory, because it does EXCACTLY the same, on air and water, I just got myself a DFI LANPARTY UT CFX3200-DR, and I must say, it's INSANE to see the difference, my old ABIT AN8-32X did well on clocking the cpu, but not on ram, now I see the difference on the workout I can give my cpu when the ram equally goes up , but DAMN it's hot, I couldnt even take them out without burning my fingers before I stuck a 120mm sunon upon them Either way, I moved all the way up from asus a8r-mvp, to an8-32x and now with my dfi lanparty it seems that my chain of command did me well, cause i learned alot burning out the two previous boards and the lanparty is way more advanced than both the two before

I think for us both that 2.8ghz on this cpu is within the "safe" limit without burning it up, mind you, without phase-cooling or a waterchiller I have mine on 1.4 or 1.45 volts, don't quite remember, i'm on my laptop now, but it should be safe, read somewhere else on xtremesystems forums that one of these died on 1.5 or 1.55, so where i am today should be safe

What volts do you have your running on?

With slight voltage bump for stability mine idles around 32c-34c which I think is great on air, so I'm happy with 2800mhz 24/7

I'm happy with the 2.8 ghz too, but I had to adjust it some cause of my ram and cpu wasn't happy with going 1:1, so I had to set my multiplier down to 9x and htt up to 305, going 2750 mhz now, but my pc4000 ram is now at it's stock 500mhz, and I'm not complaining with a 50 mhz loss on my cpu, my ram can go all the way up to 580mhz since it's samsung uccc chips on them, but I don't like it since it gets quite hot then, have a 120mm sunon fan blowing on the ram allready

And by the way, my volts are set for 1.425 in bios for cpu. Had to check it and say it here

Hehe.... but the guy is right though about the heavyness of an overclock with pentium, BUT I WOULD'NT TOUCH PENTIUM unless I was paid to do so, cause the price my friend you pay in $$ is much more than what you get in return. If we compare AMD and Pentium, AMD is both cheaper and cooler, wich for US is important!! Especially the cooler-part!!

    My X2 42000+

    Hi
I'm new here. And have been away from overclocking since 98 when I used to overclock my K6 with a Peltier unit donated by a 12V beer cooler.
    I now drive an AMD Athalon X2 4200+ Windsor, on a ASUS M2N-E with 1Gig DDR2 PC4200 533Mhz. And an ATI XTX1950X on visuals.
At 2706Mhz (246X11) it can run overnight with dual Prime95s. Just a couple more Mhz and it goes unstable under load.
The funny thing is that it has the exact same limits stock cooled ( 66C at max load) or water cooled ( 47C at max load).
This leads me to believe that the bottle neck is perhaps not at the CPU.
Could one of you young gurus have a peek at my setting and push me in the right direction?

Maybe your cpu won't go any further, but to make an attempt to se if it does or not you may try to lower your hypertransport multiplier, I see that it is over 1200mhz now, and these cpu's don't support more than 1000mhz, so by lowering this multiplier to 4x you in theory won't lose any effectiveness. I calculated yours to be at 5x now, 245 * 5x = 1225 ... and in addition to this you may try to slack up the timings on your ram, I'm not familiar with ddr2 so I don't know what is appropriate here.

The cpu and ram don't always "go" 1:1 when overclocking, when you see in cpu-z it says cpu/10 it is 1:1, but when it says cpu/9 it's not 1:1, it has to do with the algorithmitc calculation, that they have to calculate things in the same order to function properly, but been overclocking before I think you know this, if not maybe this was positive learning

If not any of this what I said works, you also may try to lower your cpu multiplier to 10x and go for a higher HTT (FSB) ; But then you also need to lower hypertransport multiplier to 3x so it won't go over 1000mhz. And setting your RAM divider a bit lower goes without saying because of cpu:ram 1:1 is in most cases a "no-go"

    hi,

i have some questions about different core temps.

my x2 3800+ with e6 stepping and 2x512mb cache has different core temps.

    idle: 10-12°C

    load: 5-7°C

no ihs, at the moment clocked at 3020mhz@1,47v on dfi nf4 cooled bye sonic tower (three 120mm fans) and coollaboratory liquid pro.

can i do something, to improving the temp differences, or is it a normal effect, with technical background?

what are your experiences, suggestions ?

    sorry for my german-english ;-)

This temperature has to be wrong. If not, it seems your cpu is mistaken for a refridgerator Is your cpu the 65watt or the 90watt? Mine is the 90watt. and usually is at 30 celcius.

    hi,

that were only the core differences, not the absolute temperatures.

in addition my absolute core temps

    idle: 28°C - 40°C

    load: 44°C - 51°C

51 celcius may be a bit hot at full load, but may also be just fine. If it's prime95 stable for 20-24 hours I think you just can leave it there. Idle temp is fine, mine varies between 30-35 idle with a copper cooler.

To answer your question, to get a lower temperature you can try to lower your cpu voltage a notch Northbridge voltage may also have an effect on the cpu-temp.

On my FX60 it's a problem... cause the worst core... core 0, is clocking worse, need more volt, and gets a hell of a lot hotter! Ruining the overall oc.

Toledo (E6)vs. Manchester (E4) cored processors?

Have the chance to get x2 3800+, tray # ADA3800DAA5CD, with Toledo Core & E6 stepping, for under $100 USD.

What's the consensus on Toledo (E6)vs. Manchester (E4) cored processors?

    Thanks
    Sparx

when I prime the proc @ 2.4GHz for 2nd core only (a.k.a core 1), the temp jump up from 40'c to 52-53'c... so does this core defected?

    I have a question here.

If we dont take into consideration of stepping and assumed that all are 06 production,

    X2 3800+ E6, X2 4200+ E6 and X2 4200+ E4

among 3 of the X2 s939 proc above, which one have high properbily with the great oc ability?
