    Vista Install Problems

I tried installing Vista Ultimate RTM build (both 32 and 64 bit versions) today on my new build. I've had XP running just fine for the past week (Memtest and Orthos both no problems). However, Vista installation always crashes at random places no matter what I do. Has anyone else experienced this?

    This is my setup:
Abit AB9 QuadGT (latest Beta BIOS)
QX6700 @ Stock, cooled with Zalman 9700 LED
    2x1GB OCZ PC2-6400 @ SPD
    PNY 8800 GTS
    Seagate 7200.9 300GB
    Samsung SH-S183L SATA DVD-RW
    Thermaltake Toughpower 700W

Lemme guess, sometimes crashes at rebooting stage or during installation completion stage?

I have the same problem, everything locks up.

I tried RC2 and RTM versions, I know the cd is not problematic since I installed on old build before, on RC2 it mentions something about ACPI or other core. I assume its processor related.

I saw another thread some guy had to disable his other core and installed on one core then maybe you can enable the other core after install finishes. Not so good for me however, DFI doesn't allow it like 680i boards.

The problem was though however that it would not let me re-enable the second core. So I scrapped it...I think it is because you are somehow not perfectly stable. I am going the route of gigabyte ds3, currently have biostar p965.

Oh thanks for clearing that up. I have tried this at stock too but only on quadcore so we will see what happens. Messed with bios settings also and about 15-20 installs later, still freezes on same step, this is on RD600 board.

so far have not seen any install threads so maybe when retail is released more people will have comments on this.

I had some problems when I had SATA cables installed on my motherboard but no drives attached to them... that's the only time I had problems installing. Have you tried running the install from Windows? That way it can download the updates to the installer and still do a fresh install.

After hours of trying and countless attempts, I realised that it's impossible to install Vista on an Abit AW9D+QX6700 combo.
Installed fine one the same system with an E6700 though, which leads me to think that it's either the quad core or the way it's detected/handled by the Abit board(s).
Also, a friend of mine installed Vista on an eVga 680 + QX6700 just fine...

Been using retail since late october (MSDN).

No problems at all, biggest problem is perhaps still somewhat low OpenGL performance.

Also Vista install worked fine here on a dual quadcore testbox.

Perhaps try and look for a newer BIOS, or any BIOS settings.

It seems like from everyone's responses, the general consensus is that it's a pain getting Vista to install on a system running QX6700 (except for the guy that had it running on a evga 680i).

Is there anyone out there that's had SUCCESS with Vista, QX6700, and a p965 board?

I've figured out my problem. There seems to be a compatibility issue with my board (Abit AB9 QuadGT) and my CPU (QX6700). I swapped out my QX with a E6700 and everything worked fine. It even fixed a LAN issue I was seeing before.

very good question. I have been seriously wondering how I am going to get raid working for my nf4 Ultra-D. Does Vista support these chipset drivers internally now meaning it will just find and install it? If not is there even any vista 64bit drivers for the NF4 chipset around? My copy of Ultimate 64bit should be here today.

Hmm for my board it didn't need SATA drivers. But I imagine it might be different for Vista, you should be able to get your manufacturers RAID drivers from their website.

Vista had all the drivers for my 965 so I didn't have a problem. You'd think that it'd have all the nf4 drivers since it's older than 965. But then again, maybe MSFT has some beef with Nvidia and decided to leave them out.

hmmm well ill just try booting from it and see what happens

    *edit...*
Looks like you still need some kind of drivers or something, im not really sure. But uhh...
Yeah it freezes up at 90% of the 2nd step, so i guess i need 64bit F6 drivers for Intel Matrix ICH8R...
If anyone can help me out THNX!

Are you using P5B deluxe? If so, you shouldn't need any extra drivers... my Ultimate 64 loaded just fine with-out extra drivers on an Asus Comando.

yeah i actually got it, turns out the real problem was w/ my CPU being OCed or something i guess. I reset CMOS and off i went installing, although the install takes FOREVER! (1hr)...

Yeah, vista is good stuff tho, i love it, but i will take a little getting used to.
