Arrow Elpida 70nm IC: The Birth of a New King?

What should we expect from these new chips?

    From DailyTech:

''Elpida Memory announced that it has begun mass production of 1-Gigabit and 512-Megabit DDR2 SDRAMs using 70-nanometer process technology. Manufacturing will be done at its main fab facility in Hiroshima, Japan.

The majority of DRAM on the market today is manufactured on the 90nm process. The move to 70nm process technology enables speed increases to 800MHz and 1GHz and a reduction in chip size. The move also allows for incrementally more chips per DRAM wafer which decreases per-unit manufacturing costs.

A 1-Gb and 512-Mb DDR2 SDRAM using 70nm process technology can be used in many applications, including high-end servers that need to process large amounts of data, high-performance mobile equipment, HDTVs, DVD recorders, DSLR cameras and other digital consumer equipment that must have advanced image processing capabilities.

Elpida plans to make aggressive use of its new 70nm process technology in the production of memory for mobile phones and other mobile equipment and in memory products used in high-end digital consumer equipment and across the entire server/PC market. Production of DDR2 SDRAM using 70nm processing has already started and the first product shipments are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2007.

Well elpida is already pretty cheap, 70nm should be even cheaper. If they're running 1ghz stock it can't be to bad. Should be a nice affordable way to get a decent 4gb setup.

Micron is 78nm to be precise

I wonder why we don't see any high-end Samsung ICs on memory. They do offer a DDR2-800 part, and I can't imagine it's so bad that it's totally useless.

Well I certainly hope Micron, Elpida and Hynix will have good yields with those and will reduce prices. It`s realy getting redicilous to pay ~$250 for PC5300 kit only that you know it got D9 chips. I`m not even mentioning prices in EU

Decreasing productions cost is great for Elpida but we won't see the savings until the market is saturated. No mention of energy savings?

If this makes decent speed ram cheap then thats all I will care about. Power saving wont do anything since most will over volt the ram while overclocking

I'm pretty sure no one here is interested in energy savings, but a decrease in voltage to run at stock speeds would give us a little more room to play on boards that don't offer more than 2.4v w/o a volt mod. Since the press release was directed at the general market I would have thought that it would have warranted a mention, if in fact there is energy savings to be had.

Should this thread be over at the News section as well?

True I guess even if the ram was DDR1000 @ 1.7v the possibilities are endless

If they suck up the voltage happily like the Micron ... yes.

Uh ... yes we do. Of course we do. Ultimately we want them to pay us to put their highly binned sticks (sprinkled with magical OC pixie dust) in our rigs.
