About Temperature, what is most affidable....Intel Thermal Analisys or PC PROBE 2? With Intel's software the temp are 5-7° higher than PC PROBE2.
Intel's Thermal Analysis tool is much like Core Temp. It reads the internal Core temperature reading from under the heatspreader. Vs the Motherboard's diode which gets a reading from a different method.

SO i just got a 2nd p5b-d, from a different vendor, and am still having problems from hell. AT first, it was just the reseting the cmos to get it to post... every single time i rebooted. Now flashed from 0302 to 0614 and it wont post. I need a p4 or a celeron to get it to boot, which i dont have. I hate Asus. I, hate Asus. I hate, Asus.

How lucky must i be to get 2 boards wth almost the exact same problems that NO ONE ELSE IS GETTING.

Now, I'm trying to follow the instruction in the manual and boot into BIOS and set IDE controller to RAID. Once I did this, save and exit. I can use CTRL I to get into the Intel RAID setup menu. I can then select the 2 drive that I want ot set up as a RAID 0 and have it created. I would then save and exit and the system will proceed to reboot. It then reboots everytime it gets to the loading windows screen. If I set the comtroller back to IDE, the system boots fine.

Ok I thought this is because I didn't do the F6 3rd party controller thing so I did a Window XP re-install and this time I did the F6 and have the ICH8/R driver for desktop install, but I'm still having the same problem. My boot drive is on SATA 1 and I have tried the raid pair on 3&4 and 5&6 and it's didn't fix anything. I wonder if a full wipe and install will ork any better? TIA for any suggestions.
aaarrrrrrrggggggghhhh!! I'm in the same boat kinda....

I cant figure out how to setup a RAID 1 fresh XP pro install?!

    1. I started the BIOS setup, and went to the IDE menu and set the Sata RAID stuff
    2. I reboot, and press CTRL+I and go to the Intel Matrix menu andc create a RAID 1 volume.
    3. Reboot again, and I'm trying to let windows setup do an install, but it's just treating the drives as IDE

can someone tell me what the steps are???? PLEASE!!!

hi to the RAID problem people

i had the same issue as i already had the OS installed but didn't bother with F6 drivers........WELL that's necessary

if you're doing a fresh install and just the bios itself won't let you setup raid......i don't know what the issues there is.......i've tried 0609/0614 and both are fine with RAID1 >> set RAID instead of IDE and hit CTRL+I during bootup to set up the raid >> Save exit load windows press F6 load drivers and you're done

Thanks Dinos, but I'm confused about the F6 drivers...I dont see anything about it in the manual.

can you explain exactly what I'm missing?

once I do CTRL+I, and reboot, I insert the windows XP setup CD, and then what?
Or do I install XP, and once done then reboot and THEN press F6 and do something else?

geezus, I didn't think setting up RAID was gonna be such a pain in the @ss! OCing seems like a breeze in comparison

OK put the Asus motherboard CD and boot to it

you'll get a little menu to create floppy based drivers ..........so when you start installing XP you hit F6 during startup and then when you get to the menu asking for drivers >>Putt the floppy disk in that you created and load ICH8 drviers

Wiz read the Intel ICH8R manual. You set up your BIOS as IDE originally. That's the problem. Before installing Windows, you must 1) set the BIOS to RAID, 2) create your RAID partition, then 3) F6 the drivers before you install Windows. Alternately, and this is what INtel suggests, is even if you don't plan to run RAID, is set the BIOS to RAID anyway and F6 install as well. That way you can create your RAID partition later and you should be able to do that in XP with the software or from the ROM. You also then get the benefits of AHCI and hopefully faster HD speeds anyway.

If you set the BIOS to IDE and F6 installed the drivers for RAID, the installation used the Windows IDE drivers anyway because it was set as IDE in BIOS. The BIOS must be set first. Reformat, then start over. Windows stops at the loading screen because it doesn't know it's supposed to use the RAID drivers on the boot drive. The only way you can EVER use RAID drivers on a boot drive is if you do it in the order I specificed 1)BIOS-raid, 2)f6 the drivers when you start Windows installation, 3)Windows installation. Note the first blue screen you see is where you hit F6 - at the bottom it says "Hit F6 if you need to install third-party RAID/SCSI drivers."

Why doesn't it work any other way? Simple. If you haven't done it like this, Windows can't access the drive itself because it's configured to access an IDE drive and suddenly there's a RAID drive it can't even load drivers for because it can't access the OS drive! (Catch-22!) Thus, you must be set in BIOS to RAID to begin with.

    See Intel's stuff. http://support.intel.com/support/chi.../CS-021701.htm

I'm sort of new to overclocking...I have an Athlon 64X2 4400+. but I have never been able to get it stable over 2.6 GHz, even on water, one of my cores is always unstable. This is my first venture into Intel overclocking, so I'm trying to take it kind of slow.

As you can see by my sig, I have very good custom watercooling. I don't have expectations of getting to 3.6 GHz, but I would like to hit 3.2.

I started off just unlocking the FSB, and upping it a bit. I now have the system running at 320 x 9 = 2.88 GHz. I am pretty happy with that for an hours experience with Intel.

I have most everything still on Auto, except for FSB, and memory timings. I have it set at DDR-2 800 with 4-4-4-12 timings. Other settings are as follows...

    PCIE freq...Auto
    PCI Clock...33.33 MHz
    Spread Spec...Disabled
    All volts...auto
    C1E support...disabled
    Max CPUID Value Limit...disabled
Vanderpool...Enabled (was grayed out last time I tweaked the BIOS)
    CPU TM fct...Enabled
    Execute Disable Bit..Enabled
    PECI...Disabled
    memory timings...4-4-4-12-all others auto
    Static read Control...disabled

Temps from Intel's Thermal Analysis Tool are 47-50 during Prime 95 torture test. VCore is 1.376v.

This is a good start for me, I think. what I am wondering is, what now? Do I just keep incrementally increasing the FSB? at some point, I am going to have to take control of the voltages, aren't I? Are there any of the above settings I should change before I go further?

    Thanks for any help,

    Mark

Get everything you need from the Intel website: Here Are The Downloads For The P965 Chipset.

Once you get the latest and greatest for your MoBo, set up the RAID and install the latest chipset drivers and Matrix Storage Manager.

With the latest BIOS, 0614 it also updated the ROM in the ICH8-R to 6.1.0 which is the most recent F6, floppy configuration (for RAID) utility.

Quit messing with ASUS's CD, well, except for the rest such as sound and network.

Pardon my ignorance, but I can't seem to find a straight answer for this: What am I supposed to do if I only intend to use a single SATA drive, non-RAID, in my system? Will XP Setup see it and be able to install Windows to it properly, or am I supposed to make a disk first from something and do the F6 thing?

    Dts

Has anyone tried the DTSinteractive features, do they work successfully? ie; set dts in soundmax, makesure windows is configd for 5.1speakers, and must use spdif out to a dts capable decoder/receiver, then try a game with "surround":Prey, MOHpa, Toca3, Farcry. Your receiver should light up DTS and I usually throw a grenade then turn my back on it, or go up to a character that is speaking and do a 360 to hear his voice go around each speaker. I am asking here because it seems people are getting bsods with this onboard audio solution.

    hmm guys,

    i need some help:

because my stock HSF is making such bad contact (the base is like a soup bowL ) I am just focusing on ram oc at the moment.

    and,

But, when I reboot, the comp fails to go into OS. It just sits there doing nothing, untill i power cycle after which it does "dual boot" and is up again?

    Whats going on?

Also, can someone tell me where exactly I should go about measuring the Vcore, Vdimm? I went by Bachus_anon's guide and I got:

    Bios = 1.3V
    Idle (DMM) = 1.28V
    Load (DMM) = 1.18V

This amount of Vdroop is insane. Any advice? I am waiting on my Tuniq Tower 120 to arrive before I can push volts.

I don't know if it changes at 400. Tests (including my own) have shown that 399 > 400 is fine, but going to 401 produces a big memory drop, so it probably switches to 1333 at 401 instead of 400

I got 3.33ghz right now (370*9) with only 1.4v to the CPU.

Thermal Analysis temps max out @ 44°c on core #1 and 42°c on core#2 during 100% test on both cores. MOBO temp was 31°c

That was without trying really. It feels like this CPU will do so much more! - but saying that, it probably won't!

My aim was always to get 3.4ghz from this chip. After reading people on here getting 3.5 / 3.6 etc. As this is my first major overclock I went 100mhz under them. I said that I'd be happy with 3ghz daily, but it's running so ace right now it's amazing.

If I remember correctly my FSB Termination and N/B voltage is still on "auto" as well. Will have to check that when I get back in.

It was a long road and one that is now over. Behold the updatedrig:
