G80 comming in June, so says many sites. is that even possible so soon after g71.?/?

Many sites previewing the G80 and its 800Mhz Shader Model 4.0 Direct X 10, 80mm, GDDR4 insanity, say that its comming in June. One said April.

Realistically speaking, I woudn't be surprised if this was the case, as nVidia and ATI have released cards in such a manner in the past..

How possible it is that G80 will come June 06. What do you think.

Reason I'm asking; is it worth Investing in the 7900 G71 Series as its predecessor proclaimed to be a major leap in performance is comming a few months away.

is it possible? sure, jsut look how quickly Ati got the X1900s out after the 1800s.

I think what will determine this is if MDollar releases DX10 for XP, or if they hold it off until the Vista release. Has anyone heard info on the DX10 release?

Quite possible. I think only a small team was assigned to design the die-schrink from the G70 to the G71. I think most effort after the release of the G70 was put into designing the G80. It didn't take much time to design the 7600 core since it is so simmular to the G70 and G71.

DirectX 10 will be released TOGETHER with Windows Vista.
And Windows Vista's projected release time frame is H2, 2006.

So I doubt there'll be new DX10 chips out there soon.
After all, DX10 is a totally different API and incompatible with all previous DirectX.

DX10 was already killed by MS long ago.

they already said they were doing away with the whole DX thing, and going a whole different route.
something about combining Direct X and Open GL into a more unified standard. they ever gave it a whole different name, and have said it will not be released for windows XP, but for vista.

people lately seem to be really freaking out about DX10... but it doesn't exist... unless MS has said something new recently.

so I wouldn't expect anything about a new graphics standard till Vista starts to loom on the horizon.
so I'd be thinking this is a load of bullpucky, sounds like a site is trying pull someones leg.

"The command and conquer model," said the EA CEO, "doesn't work. If you think you're going to buy a developer and put your name on the label... you're making a profound mistake."

    No you are wrong.
MS by "unified" does not mean combining DX and OGL.
The word "unified" means the graphic core registers and API instructions doesn't have Vertex and Pixel processing difference. They are going to use same instruction slots and registers.

And the name "WGF", as Windows Graphic Foundation has been changed back to DirectX.

Windows Vista will include 2 sets of DirectX API: DirectX 9L(modified DirectX 9c for longhorn driver model), and DirectX 10.

Because DirectX 10 is not compatible to all previous versions. We may not see a standalone redistributable package for Windows XP.

WGF was the code name tha MS used until they fully annouced it. Also no OS besides Vista will be able to have DX10 installed so there wont be a standalone installer for XP.

A very nice plus side is that with the DX10 the rules are rewritten and one thing that will be better for all of us is strickt SM4 compliance tests. Basically there will be no more use for TWIMP or GITG programs when it comes to DX10 games MS wants to make a card follow DX10 rules completly and not make up its own.

My guess would be the October - November time for a G80.
