AMD AM2: More than just a Memory Change

Whenever the launch happens, those moving to AM2 will at a minimum need a new processor for a new Socket 940, new DDR2 memory to replace existing DDR memory for Athlon 64, and a new or revised heatsink/fan cooling solution.

sucks that HSF's wont be backward compatable. new mobo,cpu,memory and HSF. Only things your gonna be able to salvage is Video and HD's

I would really really like it if the manu's would pick a single heatsink attachment method and stick with it.. all this changing is crap.

No problem with the HS, the big manufacturers will make brackets for it to make the old heatsinks fit anyway.

BT should work, might just need a different piece on the bottom with holes in a different location, or like stevil said, a drillbit

Strange move to change the HSF cage. While it has 4 bolts (which is good for heavy HSFs), it has only 1 lug-clip (which is bad as it will allow for bad seating when the mobo is vertical). Just my opinion, but time will tell. I use BT, so I think TT will make a new (cheap!, or free ) plate.

When I readed "More than just a Memory Change" I was expecting something interesing, not just an Heatsink mounting mechanism change. The only thing that seems certainly about Socket M2 besides DDR-II support is the inclusion of Pacifica and Presidio.
By the way, why a lot of people wants to wait for Socket M2 to upgrade they computers? Do someone forget that things recently released cost a whole bunch and if AMD did what it did with Socket 939, it will release the most expensive Processors first and we can wait as long as 6 months more to get the lower end models? Or is everyone specting that AMD releases a Socket M2 Sempron at launch day that kills Socket 939 sales?

you could also see it on the pics of the MSI board.

i wonder why now they go back to 4 holes cause socket A used to have 4 then they went to 2 holes with 754 and 939 and now back to 4.

I am more concerned with when. If it indeed is July, then I'd rather wait for Conroe and see what beats and just settle for an FX-60 atm.

Btw, new heatsink mounting is more than welcome (now we just need Intel and AMD to use the same four hole mounting system), it'll probably help a lot with naked cores cracking without the IHS.

i thought i read somewere that Nforce4 will also b able to b used on Am2.
cause mem controller is in the CPU there wont have to b made any real changes to the chipset.

i take it all big boys will want to have a board at launch so they wotn miss out on any sales.

IMO I think "the big boys" are not so much concerned with the price. The only thing that really gets on my nerves is the wait. (cough ATI cough) and how things get delayed...and delayed........and delayed.

For example, I wouldnt want to guess how many people are upset that the RD580 board got pushed back. For gaming use and benchmark purposes. All the hype and now they just shrug their shoulders and roll their eyes saying "oh, sorry." - at least update us, they cannot even provide that

it is just a pain in the butt when you trying to put a new rig together and benchmark, when the two most hyped pieces of hardware release months apart from each other. Its more so anoying than the dent it puts in our pockets.

M2 source clock is 333MHz that's 66% increase clock increase compared to current 200MHz. This means even if nF4 would work with M2, the speed bump would decrease chip yield -> using nF4 would be more expensive.

Exactally. Perhaps the semprons will have 200 base HTT but the upper end and X2s definatly will have atleast 266 and most will have 333 (if not all depending on how the final spec comes out)

hopefully heatsink manufacturers will start using a metal backplate with bolts coming through the four mounting holes, and attach the heatsink with nuts from the front. Excellent mounting pressure, solid hold for even the heaviest heatsinks and ease of mounting waterblocks as well. Why bother with the stock retention mechanism when its so much easier to come up with better ones, and all it involves in changing one is undoing a few screws.

maybe they want to come out with their own retail big typhoon look-a-like cooler, and dont want to hear about it bending the motherboard

Prescotts arent that hot, ppl just need to give it up already. I never had any heat issues with any of my prescotts even at 4 gigs and air cooling.

If the new Amd is gonna be as hot as the prescott, I got no problem with that whatsoever.
