Already posted this on an Australian site but I thought I’d move it here as well to get some international feedback. I purchased a 2 gig set of patriot ram from a local aussie dealer when it arrived, and as stated in another thread it turned out to be BE-6, as opposed to the BE-5 or CE-6 that has been encountered by American’s who bought this.
I can’t find anything on BE-6 chips, so there’s little for me to really compare this with. At this stage I’m only running a 3200+ Winchester on stock air in an abit av8 mobo. My NF4 SLI-D and 3800+ X2 will be coming soon. I’m hoping the extra voltage, better motherboard (the av8 is a via chipset =/) and better memory controller will help improve these results.
Things I’ve found so far:
1) I don’t think my motherboard likes 250 HTT or more. Even with the multipler down to 8X and vdimm increased, it won’t even post windows at 250 2.5-3-3-8, despite the fact that at 245 with the same timings it is SP 32M stable. Surely 5mhz wouldn’t have such a big impact, making it go from rock solid to not even postable? I was expecting a gradual decline in performance. Might be explained by the fact that it is a via chipset.
2) Tref value makes a HUGE difference. By default I believe it was on 200mhz/7.8us and I couldn’t get past loop 6 of SP 32M. After tweaking it for a bit, I landed on 200mhz/3.9us, and 200mhz/1.95us, both of which did a full 32M run with the same HTT/timings. From loop 6 to a full run is a massive difference. Memory bandwidtch in Sandra between 200/3.9 and 200/7.8 is almost nothing (50-100 pts).
3) These chips don’t like cas 3. They are more stable at cas 2.5 than 3.
And without further ado, heres a screeny. I did this last night, 240 at 2.5-3-3-8 SP 32M stable. This morning I ran it at 245 same timings, but I was running out the door so the screeny isn’t online, its stuck at home. Sorry the screeny is slightly cut off but the other place I uploaded it has a size limit, and I didn't have irfenview at the time to change the quality (recent format).
I’ve been burning at 240 2.5-3-3-8 with 2.7volts all yesterday, this morning I set it to burn with the same at 245. Myty mobo goes up to 2.8v, but I don’t think these chips like much voltage, because I don’t see a sizeable improvement.
Considering most ballistix users get 270-280, and these cost half as much for 20-35mhz less (but at slightly better timings) they’re a bargain. I want to hit 250 with my timings and I’ll be happy, 260 and I’d be ecstatic. I have yet to tweak other settings like async.
Enjoy.
