i've lost all faith in ati, i just dont think the really have something good to fight nvidia (by the info the CEO released today), hopefully i'll be wrong
What I got from this is that RD580 may not need to use crossfire edition cards to enable crossfire because it could be done through the mobo, where-as the older (soon-to-be-released) RD480 will need master cards. What this means is it's a pain in the ass for mobo makers to create a board on tech that will be soon obsolete. From the looks of it, the newer version of the mobos (RD580) will be out before the end of the year. Who would want to buy a board that in only a few months will be replaced with a newer chipset that eliminates the need for mastercards?
I also took from that, but am kind of sketchy, that RD690, the next chipset from there, will be made using the same kind of composite engine that RD580 does. Also, Intel's boards may not use the older design at all, and may jump directly to the new design (RD400[using 500 tech]-->future chipset RD600 for intel, where-as AMD is RD480 [400 tech, old engine, needs MC]-->RD580 [500 engine]-->RD690).
I am almost 100% positive this has to do with that final respin they did of the crossfire chipset. They were phasing out the needing of mastercards. It's all a fact of how fast people want it (yesterday) and that some mobo makers like sapphire/DFI have mobos ready with the old chipset. They could scrap it and delay it even FURTHER, or release a revision in a couple months as they seem to be doing. Because of that fact we might see RD480 boards out very soon, but needing master cards, and RD400 (intel first rev) and RD580 (AMD second rev) out before the end of the year that won't need them.
Personally, it's looking like RD580 will be worth waiting for...and intelites won't even have to mess with it at all.
Who the hell knows what RD600/690 will be. Perhaps we can only hope it's IGP with multiple gfx cards all capable on crossfire at the same time (1x16 or 2x16 pci-e slots + IGP). That would be cool, and the next logical step as we know ATi is fully capable of making it happen.

That is all.
Peace and love.
well looks nice but no more info on the chipset?? ie sata ports usb ports you know the extra add ons?
btw thanks for the translation i couldnt find a nice translator![]()

I imagine the only differance between the two chipset revisions will be the necessity or lack there-of of mastercards (At least this is what HKEPC alludes to). I imagine they will still have the ATi/Uli southbridges, only the RD400/RD580 northbridge (containing the newer composite engine) will be improved.
In this case, while AMD may have the first boards out (R480 using first revision chipset), they will be at a disadvantage as Intel's won't need mastercards, and neither will later AMD boards that use the later chipset (RD580).
IOW: RD480 is looking to be a rush job. Intellites will have as a consolation of their waiting not having to use mastercards (If board makers wait and use the newer revision), where-as the first AMD boards (RD480) will require them. RD580 will use the later revision, and only be a few months behind. This is not to say some Intel board makers won't put out an RD400 board with the older master-card necessary chipsets. They may, it's just why do that when waiting only a couple months saves the need for a whole new product/revision?
Looking as RD580 is sampling now, and plans to hit release in December, this coincides with the respins of the crossfire chipset. IE: Don't expect mastercard-less crossfire until Dec/Jan.

ok translation from myself
motherboard makers are reluctant to make RD480 boards because RD580 (which is soon) will feature an onboard compositing engine and won't need any Crossfire Edition card to run Crossfire.
RD580 will be for AMD and after that RD690 which will be launched will be for Intel. Oddly RD500 (the one after RD400) for Intel does not feature onboard compositing engine unlike AMD who will get compositing engine with their next chipset and needs to wait until RD600 for their onboard compositing engine.
The pictures comes after this.
thanks for the translation!

ATI's RD580 is full of PCI Express promise
"We are expecting to see the boards based on this chipset sometime in January 2006 while the chipset is sampling now and it should be in production till December."

CrossFire for everyone with RD500
"According to rumours heard at Computex, ATI would be preparing the release of the RD500, a low cost chipset for Intel CPU that would be designed to have the best quality / price ratio possible. This chipset would be associated to the new Southbridge SB600 that support SATA II, HD Audio and would increase the low performances of ATI's previous Southbridge in USB. It would also support the Core 2 Duo and of course the CrossFire (PCIE 8x) It won't however support dual channel and will accept only 2 DIMMs. It would be the ideal compromise for ATI because these choices would permit the release of a motherboard at $50. Will the price gap with a more expensive card be enough to buy a second card that will process physics effect?"
