Heatkiller Backplate installation SNAFU

So I got my new heatkiller 3.0 yesterday to replace my fuzion v2.

I ordered the backplate with it as well.

When I looked through the instructions, there was no mention of the orientation of the backplate when installing it. The backplate comes with an x-shaped rubber pad to isolate the metal of the backplate from the mobo.

Fitting the rubber x to the backplate seemed easy enough. The back plate has four screw holes where it mounts to the standoffs for the heatsink. These screws have a flat side and a slightly raised side. The rubber x fits perfectly on the raised part and is held in place very well.

So I put it together this way and started the computer up. It immediately began making a strange clicking sound from the cpu area. I got no signal to the monitor and it definitley didn't want to post.

Upon further research and my suspiscion of the backplate, I found that I had installed the backplate backwards. I'm pretty sure it made some contact with the backside of the motherboard dispite the rubber x being installed between the board and the backplate.

So, after I flipped the backplate and reset cmos, it finally did post and start up.

BUT, I can no longer maintain any of my old overclocks. I'm severely limited to near stock speeds. the board runs, just no longer optimally.

SO, please let my haste be a warning to you all who plan on installing this waterbock. As I look at it now, it is somewhat self intuitive to mount it the right way. It was just those little raised areas that held the rubber x on there that got me.

Feel free to tell me how you "knew right away how to install it". Feel free to belittle me for my stupidity. I need the encouragement to be a little more careful next time...
