Both cards benefit from a GPU overclock more, and hd4850 was not really bottlenecked by the gDDR3, I did some tests awhile back comparing the 2 and when clocked the same the 4870 was only 8-10% faster overall. Compared them both at 850/1000mhz if i recall correctly.
