    Noctua NH-C14 on the way

Looks quite good, words from Noctua CEO:

"Our NH-C12 coolers are renowned to rank among the most capable top-flow cooling solutions on the market, so we're truly proud to offer a further substantial improvement in quiet cooling performance with the new NH-C14", says Mag. Roland Mossig, Noctua CEO. "This model really closes the gap to good tower coolers while being much lower in height and ensuring better component cooling."

I get it, the new era begins, we've already had heatpipe boom, then it was the gigantic heastink boom and then HDT made a honest attempt and didn't succeed and then the dual-fan coolers arrived on the already big heatsinks + lots of heatpipes and here's the next big thing, take the big heatsinks with lots of heatpipes and preferably dual fans (cheaper versions will have single) that we already have and place it horisontally for more air pressure focused onto CPU itself. Yes this one ONLY has 6 heatpipes and that's done on purpose so they can easily release an updated version with 2 more heatpipes later on etc but eventually you'll see 8 and then 10 or even 12 in the end for the same design. Well this also reminds of the old Thermalright heatsinks long ago, the only difference is that they are now bigger with more / (efficient) heatpipes. But yea I agree pointing it this way makes more sense anyway. MUCH better component cooling at same time and reduced height will make it fit to a lot more cases and also reduce the risk of incompability clearing issues (heatsink's fin base won't touch any heatsink on mobos). However this design shouldn't work that great with low rpm fans IMO as the heat from CPU itself will make also cause warmer and warmer air being moved towards cpu instead of blown in a direction away from it, with high rpm fans it wouldn't become as much of an issue though but I don't quite think this design will benefit that much from using the typical 2x1300rpm fans, however at 2x1600rpm or higher it could become quite good.

I bet next time they will focus what's being added into the heatpipes themselves for extra cooling efficiency but that's not a topic until ~2 years when as many heatpipes as possible is fit on that design.

I think that's pretty much how the aircooling business works like, one manufacturer eventually comes with a slightly different design that works better than all other designs on the market when everything that's possible has been used on current design and others follow suit copying the same design with slightly different tweaks/designs and their own marketing around it etc until that design has been abused to the point nothing more can be done to improve it etc.

I liked the other Noctua heatsink I had other than the sub par cooling capacity, well built, great fans. Hopefully this one can close the gap a bit between tower style heatsinks and downward blowing ones.

I think 140mm heatsinks is the current step.

Until overall case design changes for the better, I can't see anything larger than 140mm hitting the market.

I'm a fan of this design, but I'd like to see how it compares. Maybe they can change this design a bit for video card support.

This is nothing new. Big heatsinks with heatpipes facing downwards are old hat. And they didn't perform as well as the tower heatsinks, in fact that came out before the tower ones and got spanked. The end result was that while they cooled the motherboard components better, they didn't cool the CPU as well.

Noctua never impressed me with their heatsinks. Whenever I read reviews, they were always beaten by Thermalright and their price/performance ratio was always horrible. This design fails against towers because it fails to use rear/top case fans to expel to hot air

Not only that, but heat has much more to travel before it can be dissipated, and it's not like heatpipes just whisk heat away from contact plate.

This can't beat tower-coolers (either in cooling performance, or direction of air-flow) in a normal desktop case. But this can be a good cooler for low-profile builds, where you can't use a tall cooler.

Why not make expencive one, silver or gold heatpipes for maximum heat transfer, 100% cooling??

It won't make a big difference. Aluminum has a really good thermal conductivity, but the biggest advantage is the low weight of aluminum.

Copper would transfer almost the same too, but that's heavy. TRUE-copper is almost 2Kg, but doesn't perform much (if any) better than original TRUE, anyways.

This down facing design is only good for low profile solutions where height matters. Like in my case with microATX case where i can only use Scythe Big Shuriken or a Thermalright AXP-140 and pretty much nothing else. If you have plenty of room, go either Hydro H50/H70 or a big ass tower design.

Yeah this thing is a direct copy paste of the thermal take big typhoon from like 2005; down to the last heatpipe and fin, and that may have been copying something else for all I know. The cycle continues :P

Don't worry it still gets out just fine, heat will dissipate with the rest of the cooler air in the case which in turn will get exhausted.

Processor temps wont be lower but northbridge and vrm temps will likely greatly benefit, so its not a heatsink for competitions but for anything other than max effort overclocks it could be a better choice.

Not holding my breath though. The other down facing noctua cooler I had was about 20c. Off my triple fan ifx-14.

Wery soon ill make my own paste. I got some silver metal fine dust at home taken away copper from silver, going to make my own termal paste

Probably pure silver termal paste cost as hell, besides im goint to make it for my lifetime 50g atleast.

You managed to use the word "design" 6 times in that sentence.

Couldn't help noticing as it was the second post. brightened my day a little.

This looks like a rehash of the Big Typhoon, except even bigger and more outrageous.

I wonder what goes on behind their "labs", it seems like they have someone cook up wild ideas and they run with it, like, "how about we add 140mm fans!" Instead of having engineers do some hardcore research and development.

You would think with all the CPU and GPU firepower that we have these days, they would be able to do some diligent modeling and testing in order to create more efficient designs.

i've seen experiments... dont do it

you will make much worse paste, even if it were pure silver, than you can buy

On topic: My Dh-14 rocks for cooling, but its fugly and doesn't help my oc, only my temps. So if it fits, this C14 will likely be "sufficient".
