Flashing GTX 480 to 580 does not work :(

I tried to flash my 480's with a 580 bios earlier, but all it did was limit the fan speeds to 580 fan speeds but it still thinks its a 480, this must be locked by nvidia somehow as the cards have almost exactly the same PCB, So for all who were wandering it does not work

Is this the wrong time to ask if I can flash my GeForce 2 MX to a GTX 580?

The cards can't be that different as they still worked, they just thought that they are still 480's. I spent some time looking at the chip designs to decide whether it would work or not, and for those wandering why i would want to do this, its to attempt to gain performance.

The 480s have an SM lazer locked. So flashing a GTX480 to a GTX580 wont unlock the SM. Youll still have 480 SP instaed of 512 SP.

But im also surprise this didnt bricked the card ...

no such thing as laser locking, its all done through microcode. If a laser was used we could fix it.

    Did you test performance differences?

Your right .. they dont lazercut the card anymore ... But as far as ive read, the locked SM isnt bios locked i think.

    LOL, what a dork!

Did you think your low down 480 was gonna transform into the supreme goodness that is the 580, or were you hoping that with a BIOS transplant, it could show up as one to impress your friends? LOL!!

While we are at this ...

Does anyone know how to flash an Intel I7 920 CPU to an I7 980X, also how can I flash my current 60GB OCZ SSD to the highest capacity drive they have?

And since I have your attention, how can I flash my bank account to be a Millionaire ten times over? and for those wandering why I would want to do this, its to attempt to gain money I just want a get rich scheme to come true.

LOL, in reality, if he has a 480, why is he asking questions like this? I'm still on a lowely 285 and it does everything it needs, still does not stop me wanting a 580 though.

Actually it's supposedly the same chip with a diff process to make it smaller.
To get the id changed you'de have to mod the bios's rom strap and whatever I dn, I have it done to my 6800gt to make it a quadrofx4000.
Though..., that method isn't 100% perfect, it'll fool the drivers somewhat, open the cpl up for you and everything, but it's still not a real quado, only a hardware id mod can do that.
I can tell because the rendering quality in farcry1 is the same as a geforce, not a quadro :\.

Though with this bios modding method you might beable to doit for a geforce to geforce card, enabling the shaders up to 512.
It should be good enough to do that.
But how do you do this mod?
I'm not sure, I never sat down and tried to figuer it out.
I still have my quadro fx 4000 though so someday I can sit down and do that...

    But, flashing a 580 bios...
There's one issue I would be worried about.
The pixal precision is half that of the 480 supposedly.
Which I think means the shader quality is half that of the previous gen of cards.
Instead of say 4 pixal's per shader pixal, you get 8.
It'll look blockier for the shader effect.
I don't really know if that is what it means or not though...
But I would stay away from the consumer 580 gen of card's and only go with the quadro's ver's of that gen..

Best off trying to get those extra shader's unlocked in your 480 bios then you are that 580 bios I think.
Might be alot harder to do, but in the end the quality may be better then what you'de get in that consumer baised 580 bios.

Crikey, the OP sent me a very nasty, bordering on personal threat reply.

    How wise is that?

Hell no. Different transistor layout, it's got less 200M transistors than the GF100 among other updates. It's far from a "G0 Q6600".

do u have a link to were they dropped transistors, i also though that they dropped them but then i cannot find anything that says they did. and are they delivery or logic transistors as they added a bunch of power trenching into the gf100 after the 40nm fail so they could have cut allot out of that but not touched the logic. they are the same size so i would assume no logic was removed or changed.
