Haha, LOL. What a great support we have for a _WORKSTATION_ mobo. This will be the last time I'll get an Asus WS series mobo. The other models are supported wayy better. This is unreal..

Could anyone tell me what the difference between the P6T6 WS Revolution and P6X58D Premium? Thank you.

Major difference between P6T6 and P6X58D is that P6T6 has 6 PCI-e x16 slots and one nf200 chip and P6X58D has only 3 PCI-e x16 slots and lowest of those is running slower.

0702 has W3680 SLBV2 support. We are still testing ECC memory and throttling with a dozen or so combinations.

Intel will not certify RDIMM on the X58 platform. For those users who purchased and tried ECC Registered Memory on this board, we will not be able to certify its operation through Intel. We are currently testing additional ECC memory (4GB modules to be specific) for approval and will be updating the BIOS as those qualifications occur.

Since the board dosen't post with 4GB module installed is clear from me what is wrong, the firmware, unless I'm wrong...
If I sell a car I don't say it runs with 300 Km/h when I know the max is 180, or that it can run with rocket fuel w/o to test before at least(LOL), the customer will sue me in 5 seconds for that...
There is no such issue on server boards, including ASUS one.

Anyway I'm confident that this issue will be fixed unless there isn't another(from how many?) covered Intel agreement to protect the server boards market...

BTW while you are on memory stuff, can you please fix SMBIOS?
I noticed earlier that BIOS dosen't read/fill the SPD data(and other...), this board class should use at least http://www.dmtf.org/standards/publis...0134_2.6.0.pdf published on 09/4/2008 or http://www.dmtf.org/standards/publis...0134_2.6.1.pdf published on 04/23/2009, guess to late to be included in this series firmware, but common we should have at least 2.6.0 and ACPI 3.0 support, I have those on mini ITX crap(yes is AMI based) and not on workstation class...

    Thanks!
I am running 24GB of Samsung K4B2G0846B-HCH9 memory on this board without a problem. It is qualified on the board also. Placing a Xeon processor on a X58 platform is not going to get us ECC Registered memory qualification from Intel. We cannot change that fact.

That said we do have additional 4GB non-registered modules in qualification testing now. In regards to the SMBIOS, I will check with R&D tonight for you.

Given that this is a "workstation" board I'm surprised at the memory overclocking success eva2000 has using it. I wonder if it is due to the CPUs he has or do Asus boards just have better memory overclocking performance?

    Thank you!
But please fix P6T7 SMBIOS too, since I'm getting one as we speak...
4GB ECC Registered will not be supported as stated but 4GB ECC is in qualification now.

Maybe the new logo for this Workstation board should be:
    "Rock Solid Hearth Breaking"

    Sad but true...
What bug fixes? This board is very stable here with 12GB. Why would anyone need ECC?

Read this http://lambda-diode.com/opinion/ecc-memory , then think again, if you just play games on it there is no need...
    Define "stable".
I don't play games. My machine makes me money. Stable to me is being able to run stress tests for 10 hours without having any errors or crashing. For my needs that is suitable enough.

I'm not going to argue with what one needs in order to define stability, but the bottom line is, if you need a board with ECC then you are looking at the wrong place. Just go with a board from SuperMicro. http://www.supermicro.com/products/m.../X58/X8STi.cfm

I bought this board plus an P6T7 for exactly what was advertised on them, read what is printed on your box, it clear say ECC and Xeon support, and I don't want/need SuperMicro stuff.

So far I saw just one user/ASUS developer, bingo13 that reported 24 GB of RAM(not ECC) working, using specific Samsung RAM, rest fail all over, and no word about ECC, other then testing and validating...

Do I have to say is bad to advertise something that dosen't work?
Or how much time we have to wait to get stuff working as it should on first place?

I didn't said boards are bad, in fact they are a beautiful piece of hardware, but BIOS support sucks, that's it!
Except overclocking features, or new CPU support, released on this users forum pressure, and competitors, there is no improvement or bug fixes!

I hope this time I was clear enough...
If you need ECC support and 24GB and the board doesn't provide it then return it, otherwise you are just preaching to the choir - especially if you are not using the hardware for something that doesn't work but is evidently supported. I've been running with 12 GB with absolutely no issues.

Now as for asus - since you are a support rep who has felt the need to check in on this thread, why would Asus state on the box that ECC is supported when paired with a Xeon or is that simply no the case?

I have 24GB of the listed Samsung ECC memory working just fine. We are in final qualification testing for Micron based modules now. ECC Registered will not work correctly and will not be qualified by Intel on the X58 platform. Other than updating the controller firmware I am not aware of other "bugs" and those contacted have not responded.

    bingo13:
what is the exact model number of the 4gb Samsung ECC memory you use with success? (4gbx6=24gb)?
    what is the bios version?
where is the list you refer to?
please explain: "ECC Registered will not work correctly"?

    Thanks.

I installed a Koolance MB block and some enzotech mosfet heatsinks and broke off a resistor while removing a pesky plastic clip that was keeping the stock mosfet heatsink on. Everything runs fine though and it passed prime 95. Will this damage my board if I keep using it this way or something else? And I'm going to guess my warranty is now void since I installed a waterblock on it too?

The good news is that Koolance MB block worked great and the enzotech heatsinks temps are lower by over 15C

Uhh there are some real multiplier issues (throttling/dropping) with the Gulftown chips on this mobo. I really don't understand why there are so few BIOS updates for such a great board? After all, this is a _WORKSTATION_ mobo.

Actually, it's funny since it has nF200 and might even be better than many gaming mobos due to that chip. Why no support?

    Hi everyone,

Hope you don't mind me resurrecting an old thread. Looking to upgrade my P6T6 from an i7-920 to a Westmere + 24GB ECC memory. Wondering if the latest BIOS ever resolved all the issues mentioned in this thread, and if anyone can recommend a memory product/kit that is known to work? Specifically:

    1. Will an X5650 Q3QN A0 work, or do I need a B1?
    2. Will registered ECC RAM work or do I need unbuffered?
    3. How about 8GB modules? (I encountered great pains in the past trying to pass Memtest86/Prime95 24x7 with all 6 slots populated. Found some cheap 8GB 1600MHz CL9 Hynix modules and wondering if they're worth a shot as I could do it with just 3 of them)
    4. Any support for 32GB?

Bingo13, are you still around here to chime in and help out?

    Much thanks!

Answering my own post here for the benefit of anyone coming to this thread via Google. 1) The "A0" Xeon CPU's should work fine with the P6T6. I found an E5645 Q2WV and it's working like a champ. 2) You need unbuffered memory. 3) 8GB modules work fine. I'm using two KVR1333D3E9SK2/16G plus one KVR13E9/8I, DDR3, running at 1443MHz, CL8, 2N. That particular RAM could probably go faster but increasing amounts of QPI/uncore voltage are required from the CPU to achieve stability under Prime95. Otherwise you'll start to notice corrected ECC errors in the Event Log (very cool!). Interestingly these aren't visible to Memtest86 or Memtest86+, which both report 2+ full passes with no errors at higher speeds. YMMV.
