At a loss..and need some help.

Okay, motherboard outside the case. Works fine...

Motherboard inside the case...sometimes boots, other times the motherboard hangs on 2E.

I stripped the board down to cpu and ram when in the case, same grounding problems. I put those insulating washers on the mobo screws..same problems. I took the I/O backplate off, same problems.

Has anyone had grounding problems with a 790FX-GD70??

I'm really at a loss here what to do now..it's really starting to get to me..

You've literally replaced EVERYTHING? As in, she basically has a new PC?

Yes, new case, power supply, motherboard, cpu, ram, graphics card, hard drive. The only thing that is the same is the dvd-rom. But the I have the same boot issues whether the dvd-rom is hooked up or not.

I just ran KillDisk on the drive formatting it with that instead of letting windows do it, gonna reload XP and see if that fixes anything.

small update:

running killdisk to format and reinstall XP did nothing.

I disconnected everything from the mobo except cpu, ram and video card. Still having the random boot issues.

Flashed the bios with the newest version, same boot issues.

I dunno, kinda pulling my hair out here. Any advice?

Is it a stand alone video card? If it is, are you sure the card is seated correctly and it has sufficient power?

Just tried moving the card to a diff pci-e slot with different power leads as well.

As for enough power. It's a 650w corsair psu and on it is a amd 955 PII with stock hsf, msi gd70 mobo, 4gb ram, 1x ati 4890, 1x 7200rpm hd, 1x dvd-rom, 2x 120mm fans and 1x 140mm fan. The power supply should be more than enough I think.

Did you remember to use standoffs on the motherboard tray or did you just screw the mobo directly to the tray.

Yah I used the standoffs

The I/O panel wouldn't of lined up with the backplane if I didn't.

If it's a video card error, could it be that when you screw it down the video card is being forced out of alignment and hence is not making a good connection ?

I'm with yng, sounds like when you are putting it in your case the PCIe video card is not properly seated(more then likely on the backside). When you pull it out of your case it is getting seated properly since there is no back panel to obstruct it. As far as grounding, if you used the lil gold stand offs then you more than likely have nothing to worry about. Unless your CPU backplate is hitting the mobo tray(shouldn't be that thick). Only other thing I could say grounding it is a faulty PSU cable, I'd check for any cuts in the cable(start with the video card cables).

This is one thing I could possibly see happening. The CPU backplace is pretty thick and the 4 screws would possibly be touching the case. Would putting a small piece of electrical tape over the tip of the screw be a bad idea?

Give it a go, if it works you know you are on the right track. Many coolers with back plates I've seen recently are well insulated where it might touch the motherboard tray.

If it works, I'd look at better insulation, electrical tape can melt fairly easily and the back part of the CPU can get very hot.

Sorry, should of mentioned. It's running a stock cooler. Goto this link and look at the pic of the board. The 4 screws in he black bracket are the ones I'm concerned about.

Those four screws do look fairly prominent, you should try and insulate them if you think they may touch the motherboard tray.

Once you have established if this is your problem or not, you can then look at a more permanent solution.

I'd be inclined to take a dremel to the area of the motherboard tray and cut away the area at the back of the CPU and its mounting points for good.

Most newer cases these days come with mobo trays that have holes for the CPU mount areas, its one of those excellent ideas you wonder why it took so long to come to fruition.
