Performance looks very questionable.
...and Martin is mostly retired from doing a lot of "custom" work.
It's a new D5 top/res combo that is made by Primochill and slated for release on Nov. 1. I don't know all the details but it looks like you mount the D5 to the back of the res and then it feeds 2 of the fittings on the back (think split loops) and then there are 2 separate return lines on the back as well. There is also another version of the res that will have 8 fittings on the one side and (I guess) the 2 on the front.
Yeah, I don't like those either.

ive seen the internals on that T3 dont be too quick to judge. it has a full
360 degree deep draw helix and a double sized low blockage outlet that feeds
an expansion chamber for reduced pressure loss. it also has a spiral inducing inlet
area that is domed and VERY sharp so theres a lot less loading going into the
impeller. obviously it wont run two loops as well as it would one, but if your pumping
cold water into your parts and dont have all the loses you get from "T"s and "Y"s
etc performance should be pretty good
also
the other version of the res is just a regular res with 8 inlet/outlets on the back
it also has a flow indicator built in which is nice. both reses were designed by
Geno from boxgods. pretty awesome stuff. i really like the d5 res![]()
The thing that has me questioning the performance is that common "res" for the outlets, seems like that would allow a noticeable amount of pressure drop. It does look impressive and if it can match that with decent performance, I think I might have a home for one. That's why I brought it up as a serious test candidate for skinnee, I'd like to see some numbers on it as well as these other tops.

The Typhoon 3 is not really designed to do what typical D5 tops do. Think of it as a different approach to the problem. There is only so much performance anyone can eek out of the trusty D5 with the normal "refreshes" so I took a different approach. Pumping water directly from one component into the next one down the loop is obviously not an optimal solution so I tried to take out the losses you get with a split loop from all the associated plumbing connectors (Y. T, manifolds etc).
Obviously one pump will not drive two loops as hard and fast as it will one, but the goal is not really to pump 1 or 2 or 5% better, but to COOL everything on the loop more efficiently right?
Not everyone wants to put 2-3 pumps, three triple 120 rads, and 43 fans in their machine cough*Darth Bevis*coughand this is a good solution for them.
Anyway, not even sure who's thread this is and I don't want to hijack it so I will start one on the Typhoon III shortly when I have more information to pass on.

Again, not to hijack this thread, but the "common res" as you called it is really an expansion chamber. I know this is not a glamorous analogy, but if you have ever been in an OLD building or one with poorly laid out plumbing and worked a faucet and heard that bang bang sound which is draw down (commonly referred to in the US as water hammer) then you have experienced a common pressure killer. The solution is usually a short length of pipe above the feed lines to the faucets--say 12" to 18". The expansion chamber in the reservoir that acts as a staging area between the helix outlet and the twin out ports on the back is sized to minimize pressure drop. Martin has mentioned previously that the type of fitting or "item" causing any sort of restriction in your loop will do so at differing rates depending on where it is in the loop and its distance from the pump head. That is one of the reasons he is so very careful to not only put identical components in his test loops, but also in the same places and order.
If you look at the outlet on the stock D5 and it was say .30" in diameter, then the same area on the Typhoon III which is nearly double that, then factor in that the twin outlets are each .4" in dia and are only an inch from the pumps primary outlet you will find that the drop is not substantial. Present yes, but not nearly as bad as it would be if all the ports and the expansion chamber were not tuned to work together. I even factored in the reservoirs orientation when mounted in the case and how gravity will effect the water. Even the shape of that primary outlet is altered for increased performance. I have not gotten a good nights sleep in 3 weeks because there is pretty substantial shrinkage in injection molded parts. Something I could not really compensate for in the design compared to the rapid prototypes. Candidly, the prototype just kicked butt. The fear for me is that shrinkage (theres a good joke here somewhere lol) will affect that finely tuned balance and performance will suffer. Rapids are something like $500 USD and the injection molding tooling costs as much as a nice car so you just don't get a redo lol.
The first production samples are on their way from China so I will know one way or the other in a week to 10 days. Primo Chill will be sending a sample out to some independent lab for performance validation testing and I will be sending mine to Martin who will do a better job then some lab rats in Boston. Either way, we will ALL know soon =)

It's the way business works in my industry (automotive). You don't go to GM World HQ and start explaining how your part is really going to perform well, you bring the data. I realize I'm not in that industry here, but my impression of the XS Liquid Cooling section...well, there are all sorts here, but quite a few technically savvy and performance minded guys.
If you don't have data, let's definitely get an independent guy motivated to do a shootout Martin style!

I do have test numbers and video etc but they are all of the rapids, not on an actual production sample off the line. I never allowed reviews on cherry picked pre production lab samples on my site for hardware...so I am not going to break that rule with my own parts. Production samples are going to Martin and Skinnee when they arrive. Primo Chill is also sending one off to an independent lab that does some sort of UL type testing for the raw numbers like flow and head etc. I can't remember the name off the top of my head...was in MA.
Also for the record, I didn't post the pictures of T3 in here, OR the water cooling UK forums. If I had been the one to decide when they were posted I would have waited. I hate that we get the pre announcement of the announcement of the upcoming launch date of new products ala Jobs and Apple. That said, Brian had the stones to plunk down 20K for production so he gets to make the call, not me =)
