Have you considered having housing 2 pumps inside the volcano? You could have one pump that draws from the outside of the volcano, just run a tube under the black acrylic and then have the output running to a barb on the inside of the res allowing that to flow to the outside. kinda like having 2 barbs thread to thread facing opposite.

Then have the return line from the loop flow into the inside of the volcano with the DB1 sitting inside with an open inlet and you could possibly use a ball valve on the inlet to help control the flow of water out of the volcano. This will allow 1 pump to maintain loop pressure while the other provides the water gushing.

maybe make a sealed box for the main pump (DDC aren't submergable iirc) since I doubt that the DB1 could push enough water up fighting against a DDC, tho I could be wrong.

Yeah it makes sense. But not dollars and cents. Fixed and limited budget on the client's part negates any extras like that. As is I gotta hustle and get this off the bench so I can finish some other projects. Good thought though

Well you're most likely already done with it, so this is moot, but ....

To actually use it as a fully functional res, I think I would use the bottom portion as a normal res with full inlet/outlet lines.

Then put a small submersible pump (heck one of the little aquarium pumps would be plenty) inside the volcano portion and just
run a tube into the 'res proper' portion. Just have the little pump doing nothing but supplying a flow internal to the volcano/res
and not the loop in general. That might generate too much turbulence or something, but I think it would work.

CD next you should build a res that looks like the flex compacity from back to the future. That would be tight on your ST rig.

I added "dots" in the corners to niche the volcano base into.


I filed the cornes of the base to notch into the dots

Hows them apples...no worries about the ports not being sturdy.



I used a grommet and elbow to make the Volcano spurter...that's a technical term.

I used enough tubing to make the volcano remoavable for cleaning


A clean volcano is a happy volcano


The loop actually helps lock the base into the dots.


Volcano in a box. The space under it is for lights.


I was going to use aluiminum on the top but I like this better.


Top lighting could easily be accomplished by laying a couple of CCL tubes across the top, or by using a 110VAC CCL in a desklamp.


The lid is two pieces...one exactly the size of the interoir and one exactly the size of the exterior...both beveled and polished. No gasket required. Easy access.

awesome!! but just one question... if water gets down inside the volcano will it just pool? or do you have some holes in the base the drain it?

That's an interesting point. I actually want the volcano to fill. I went to a fair amount of trouble to glue it and seal it so that it would hold water...I have a feeling that once full of fluid the spurting action will be more realistic than a tube squirting off the top of the box lol

The island is supported at the corners...I do hope it doesn't float

No, not saying that it will float, but if you drill a hole in the bottom of the volcano, (so the water can drain out) when it does, the water will level out and sink (not float) the island. with as much water as you'll have to add to fill the volcano, when you turn off the pump, and the water drains, it will level out.

I am trying to visualize the hydsraulic action...I doubt any water will stagnate in the volcano becasue the spurter tube is short and basically the whole volume of water will by churning and exitting from the mouth eventually...I am sure there are some interesting dynamics involved in forcing a body of water out of a cone.

Right now I want to finish a few more details. I need to add some switches, a jack for 12V in and make a skirt of black acrylic to hide all that...

Okay I just finished testing it at night with lights and as soon as I stretching my tallywhacker off I will upload the goods...it's way beyond my expectations. FIrst thing I thought was Why don't I ever make something like this for myself?

Just got back from a 6 hour MC ride... and now here's the shots I took before I left.

I'll head to the shop for a few minutes and see about getting some action

This thing belongs in a museum


I remade the top. Fusing two pieces together looked crappy to me so I made one from 1/2" material on the router...it fits perfectly and is incredibly clear.

I think the best way to top light this is with a desklamp and a 110VAC UV CCL light...putting stuff on top will block the view.

Before I ship this out I will mount three switches and make a cover plate.
