Ray Tracing To Debut in DirectX 11 *Official April Fools Thread!*

"This is breaking news. Microsoft has not only decided to support ray tracing in DirectX 11, but they will also be basing it on Intel's x86 ray-tracing technology and get this ... it will be out by the end of the year! In this article, we will examine what ray tracing is all about and why it would be superior to the current raster-based technology. As for performance, well, let Intel dazzle you with some numbers. Here's a quote from the article: 'You need not worry about your old raster-based DirectX 10 or older games or graphics cards. DirectX 11 will continue to support rasterization. It just includes support for ray-tracing as well. There will be two DirectX 11 modes, based on support by the application and the hardware.'"

I smell trouble for nvidia. They lack a x86 licence. AMD was right to purchase ATI. I just hope they kick Intel in the nuts. Its not like there is a tonne of Dx10 games out yet. DX11 will take at least 2-3 years. Maybe by then windows 7 will be out.

APRIL FOOLS! All april fools jokes found on tech sites are to be posted in this thread. Thank you, the staff.

    Old DX10 cards?!

Ugh. I'm still rocking DX9. Cool thing though that DX11 is getting finalized.

Guys, it's the aprils fools joke...look at the poster... C Lee Yu(Silly You)! Then look at the date on the article. They did an april fools joke last year stating that Phenom had an R600 built onto it as well, for those who forgot. Techarp usually does do an april fools article as far fetched as this.

Read the comments section people, do you really think companies make press statements like that?

I can't give you guys much more details than this. NDA restrictions and all that, but we have been running Crysis on Nehalem samples and some Core 2 processors. I can't quote exact numbers but the QX9650 is getting frame rates in the upper 30s. Nehalem samples are currently 50-60% faster but we think it will be closer to twice the performance at launch. Eat that, GPU!
I'll leave this open for a few hours, then it's closed as an april fools joke.

It would be a nice push from Intel and MS point of view.
We all know how they love each other. Trying to push this further by channeling money to software developers to make ray tracing software doesn't sound like something they aren't thinking about.
Intel will need some benchmark to excel in and ray tracing just might be the one.

That is unless this is all a good joke.

What we fear is the inclusion of some codes that strongly favour Intel's microarchitecture. They are getting close to 100% scalability while we are hitting much lower percentages. We will be lobbying Microsoft to remove such blatantly anti-competitive actions by Intel or we may have to come up with a much better processor. In the meantime, I hope you will tell your readers to buy more AMD and ATI products. Times are tough for us.

    Comcast Kills BitTorrent

Exclusive Just hours after acquiring BitTorrent Incorporated for $53bn in cash and stock, Comcast has shutdown the tiny San Francisco company, assuring customers and shareholders that its doors will never reopen.

Last week, the big-name American ISP told the world it would find a way of managing its cable network without discriminating against BitTorrent and other peer-to-peer traffic. But the fix has come much sooner than expected.

"There were two ways forward," said Comcast executive vice president David Cohen in a canned statement. "We could either reconfigure our network to treat BitTorrent like any other application or buy BitTorrent Inc. and do our best to destroy the entire protocol. At $53bn, destroying the protocol was the cheaper option."

Cohen said the company also intends to purchase Apple and IBM, with an eye on destroying both iChat and Lotus Notes – two other applications Comcast has been unable to manage without annoying all but three other people on the planet. "Buying Apple will cost us a pretty penny," Cohen explained. "But it’s still cheaper than letting iChat run like it’s supposed to run."

The Federal Trade Commission has yet to approve Comcast’s acquisition of BitTorrent, but Comcast doesn’t care. "We approved the deal on our own," the company told The Wall Street Journal. "Congress doesn't empower the FTC to approve mergers and acquisitions involving Comcast or any other company that has no respect for government authority."

After rubber-stamping its own deal, Comcast promptly fired BitTorrent’s entire staff, razed its offices, unplugged its data center, and forced founder Bram Cohen to change his name. "I will not be confused with a bandwidth hog," said David Cohen.

When we phoned Comcast for comment, a company spokesman denied that we existed. When we assured him that we did, he said "That’s not what I’m told."

Yes, BitTorrent Inc. oversees only a portion of BitTorrent traffic on the net, but according to independent researcher Jake Gittes, Comcast has also been systematically poisoning BitTorrent users for nearly a year and a half. "I first noticed the bodies in late 2006," Gittes told us. "And by the spring, I could prove Comcast was killing almost 300 file-sharers a month."

Speaking to The Journal, Comcast acknowledged the killings, but it preferred to call them "reasonable network management". ®

    April Fools!
"To exist in this vast universe for a speck of time is the great gift of life. Our tiny sliver of time is our gift of life. It is our only life. The universe will go on, indifferent to our brief existence, but while we are here we touch not just part of that vastness, but also the lives around us. Life is the gift each of us has been given. Each life is our own and no one else's. It is precious beyond all counting. It is the greatest value we have. Cherish it for what it truly is."
