giga ma790fx-ds5 good choice for an am2+ mobo?

looking at the GIGABYTE MA790FX-DS5 mobo...

looking at either the 5000 or 6400 BE for a processor to use with this mobo.
what do u think about this combo?

can i use ddr2-1066 with these cpu's? or does it downgrade it to 800?
i was looking at the corsair dominator ddr2-1066 (its on sale at newegg)
possibly maybe 4 sticks, but im only running winxp

other specs i wanna use with this system:

    coolermaster 690
    corsair 520 psu
    evga g92 8800gts
    150g raptor

i wanna start with solid chassis by getting an am2+ mobo so it will give me more options to upgrade in the future.

ok, first of all.. personally i would recommend the dfi dk 790fx-m2rs... that is mainly because thats what i have and it is VERY stable and a great over clocking board.

i also use a 6400 BE processor and it works flawlessly with the corsair dominator ram (check my sig for my system specs)... and YES you can run that ram at 1066 speeds if you just bump up your FSB in your Bios... i personally sit at a 250 FSB at 14x so my ram runs at 1000mhz 4-4-4-12.

when u use a k8 proc to start with it will automatically change you're mem to ddr2 800, its only from phenom that you have the 1066 support (its not board related but imc) also 4 sticks run way better on phenom then k8.

for the rest if you want max performance you're better of with 6400 oc with its bigger cache, if you want more budget then the 5000 is nice

good to see there are still people thinking about the future, 790fx is THE board that has future with its 3-4 pci-e 2.0 slots.

for the board, i have the msi one, same price as you're gigabyte ds-5 but more features , its a nice budget board but missing some bios options, probably gigabyte better with that, dfi very hard to find and m2rs even worse.

As you can see by my sig, that is what I am using and it has been stable from the start and I think quality wise it beats some of the others. Has overclocked easily also.

go for the 6400 BE else wait for the B3's since they are just around the corner

If you are not in BIOS modding or using modded bios, go for MSI, overall it's the best one (based in my testing).

Hey Tbone, I have a GBT DS5 and it's a fine board and seems very well made.
I also had an MSI K9A2 that died during a bios flash. I never tested either one of these with K8 processors but to be honest I agree with aGeoM.
If I had my choice I'd rather be running on the MSI.

Like I said both of these were only tested with Phenom, but the MSI just seemed to give a little more flexability especially if you aren't afraid to use Beta Bios, plus there is a huge thread started by KTE to help you along and answer alot of questions.

I have absolutly nothing bad to say about the DS5, but if I had it to do over, I would buy another MSI K9A2, plus it's cheaper...

If you never plan on getting crossfire or sli I would get the Biostar TA770 A2+, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138102 .

At this point that would be the key to getting a Phenom a user base. I just got my Phemon and its not even overclocked yet and Ram is @800mhz and damn its fast in gaming like my 6400+ BE @3.5GHZ Very nice cpu for the money

But the DFI UT 790FX-M2R is what I would recommend not the M2RS and the DFI board is really nice and a solid board

Brother E.: Glad to see you finally made the leap to Phenom.
Yeah, the B2 stepping gets a bad rap, but as long as the TLB fix isn't applied it's actually a pretty decent performer. Plus it's a tweakers dream, lots of stuff to play with... I wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't pick up a B2 really cheap in the next few weeks, maybe even ~$100...

Tbone: Gigabyte just released a new Bios (F5) for the DS5, which gives you IMC voltage control. That was the main reason I prefered the MSI over the DS5, so it's status just moved up IMO. It probably won't help you with K8 though. If your going to stick with the 5000/6400 it's probably irrelevant, but at least it shows they are still working on the bios...

werd thanks guys, i just wanted a board so i can upgrade to phenom and ati's new R700, 4870, whatever cards.

looks like im jumping in at the right tie with new updated bioses coming out.

ive decided to get the ASUS M3A32-MVP though if i go bald from pulling my hair out, i will reconsider dfi or gigabyte.

    thanjks
