Holly!!! Those are too high temps!!. Try using Everest, It reads from the cores too. Wow. Have you checked if your heatsink is very well seated and making good contact with your CPU? Have you checked you are giving it the right volts? I dunno about Infinitys mobos, they should be like my expert, so I'm guessing you have in the bios, a startup vcore option, and other 2, one is in Volts (can't remember the name) and the third is in percentages. So be very carefull on those calculations and how much voltage are you actually giving it.

Other thant, what is your Gskill memory model? DFI mobos are very picky with mem settings (at least lan partys are). Maybe you can tune them, or relax them a lot and see what happens.

I would suggest removing the IHS, but I think you should leave that for last.... I haven't seen any of those last steppings doing so bad at 2.8 ghz, and at a soo high temp as yours, so must be something else.... Check if the heatsink is well mounted, other suggestion is trying the stock heatsink (the one that comes with your Opty is not bad at all for 2.8 ghz, at least has heatpipes right?), so that way you can rule out the heatsink as being the culprit.

Other than that, I see you are using a .5 multi, try to avoid doing that, sometimes Optys "don't like" half multis...
Everest is F***** up. It gives me an idle temperature of 28 but it doesnt change with load. I have already made sure that the heatsink is well seated with adequate thermal paste. To confirm that its making good contact, I removed the CPU fan for a few seconds and it did get pretty hot to the touch showing there is good conduction between the core and the base of the heatsink. I am giving it the correct volts...Infinity boards only have one VCORE option. I know the Lan parties have the percent voltages too but I don't know what other voltages you are talking about...unless they are the VDIMM and VCHIP.

My RAM is GBHZ DDR500 (Can't remember the exact model number, and I am at work right now). Yea it does act funny with DFI boards but I got my opty 144 to 2.97 on air 8 hours+ prime stable with the same RAM chips. I have messed around with the timings a lot but no luck.....

I was thinking of using the stock HSF. When I go home I'll see what I can do about that. My current HS is kind of a pain to install since you have to remove the mobo and tighten its bolts by hand when installing it...

All said, the core tempeatures seem inaccurate to me. At one point during dual prime I lowered the cpu fan speed and the temp shot up to 80!!!!! My cpu would have shut down or atleast given me an error in prime if that was accurate.

    About the multi. I have used 7, 7.5, 8, 8.5 and 9.

Okay so somewhere next week I'll receive my first phase change unit. It can do -30°C @ 200W but I know I'll have to tune it down coz of the coldbug. Doesn't matter... that way it makes less noise lol. My opty is a CCBWE, so it will take SOME subzeroness, hoping for -20°C but with my luck it'll probably be -10°C .. ah well.

Aiming for 3.2ghz prime stable (thats what ben805 got with this exact same stepping @ 0°C) but I'm already satisfied with 3ghz. Probably won't do 3.2ghz anyways coz of the crappy vcore on this board. Bios = 1.4v + 200mV = 1.6v, but fluctuates between 1.52v and 1.58v Ahh well, this SS is more of a futureproof purchase anyway, hoping K8L won't have an extreme coldbug.

Damn i want to know your batch so i can avoid the batch thats are close to it, if it not are your psu that holding you back.
bios is 12.22. I don't have a drop on any of the atx power connectors. Plus I've tried ocing without the second hd and dvd-rom plugged in to eliminate the psu as a factor.

Unfortunately I wont be able to test it with the stock heat sink fan any time soon. I recently moved from Austin to Houston and some of my stuff is still in austin. Turns out that the motherboard retention bracket that you need for the stock HSF is in Austin. And yea, I downloaded the trial versions for Ultimate Everest and everest core temps match up with what core temp shows. What I still dont understand is that what's up with the huge discrepency between core temperatures and other software that calculates using motherboard. We are talking 60% difference here....that can't be right Maybe I should try removing the IHS.

the 165's and 170's are the good one's right now. why????

pretty simple, they are the cheapest dual opty's going, the turnover is tremendous, thus the earlier issues (which didn't clock as high) have all been sold. Mucho better chance of the better, latest, pour of sillycon.

175 and above, slower sellers, much more 'older' stock on hand, not the cleanest sillycon, thus lower clockage..........

Recently, I have not heard of any 165 from the Egg that isn't giving a lot of people reason to stick with the 939 for a while longer, they are all clocking 2.9 or more, 3 gig+ is common

finally got the maximum stable voltage for 2900MHz
badly even 1.44v cant run prime stable for 3000MHz. I dont want run with 1.488v which is stable but v high temp.

high temp like what? if its like 50c or something, thats not high. these chips run stable up until 67c, thats guaranteed by amd. and thats not a temp that kills the chip, its a temp under which amd does not guarantee that your chip will be stable. death is like 90c+.

you can try the CCBWE as those take some cold and CCBBEs are heavily coldbugged IIRC.

If you can pass small fft's but not large than I would guess it's a ram issue.

only if the ram is overclocked. remember that large fft's stress the memory controller more.

I have an opteron 175 coming wendesday from newegg. OEM. Now I kind of regret getting the 175, as all the great overclocks that i have seen are from 165s and 170s. Can't really find much information as to the overclocking potential of the 175s. Doesn't seem like i am likely to get a good stepping? Probably a CCBWE? There shouldn't be so much difference? I mean, makes no sense really. A cheaper CPU will clock 200 or 300 mhz higher? I was just hoping of hitting 2.7 ghz, maybe 2.8ghz.
