njkid, so it looks like burning in helped your chip? I'm wondering if I should keep on trying to break in my chip. There seems to be quite a wall at 2.7 (3000+ Venice). Prime stable 2.7 with 1.554v but go up to 2.75 with increased voltages and it will fail

Do you just starve the chip of voltage or something else? Kind of like the guide over at ocforums?

If you find yourself hitting a wall, play with the ram timings. I was stuck at 2.7 also. No matter how much voltage I gave it would stabilize it. So grab a snack and a drink then start playing with A64 tweaker.

I wouldnt know about stock cooling I went right into taking the IHS off and putting my Big Typhoon on. But before I took the IHS off I was just using the BT and was getting 2.5ghz with like 1.4v but my temps were really high at over 60c. I found that these chips run really hot and that the PWMIC area gets really hot as well. Once I got a fan over the PWMIC area I was able to go a little farther.
thanks for the info, njk. i was hoping that i can get a little higher than what i am at now without taking the IHS. I am at about 1.41 vcore now and cpu temperatures are around 32 idle and 45 under load, PWMIC is about 38 to 45.

In comparison to my san diego i would say that these cheeps run cooler than what i expected. I also noticed that some programs behave strange on the X2. For example, CBID sometimes gives errors on opening and closing. Also, for some reason, XP waits about 5 seconds on the shutting down screen...

Hehe, so did you break through your wall? What did you end up with and what timings did you try?

I think TREF, drive strength, drive data, max async, and read preamble are the ones that aren't behaving...

You are correct. Manchester chips seems to be better overclockers than Toledos since the heat is lower. Nevertheless I am hitting a brick wall at 2.8 GHz and the voltage doesn't matter, I am assuming heat is the issue at this point for air cooling (XP-120 with Delta). Also one of the chips I have is better than another (standard problem it seems). Nj has particularly good chip, don't expect everyone to be this nice.

2.8GHZ on air to be honest is darned good.... Only chips I got so far on air stable with sane voltage on air (below 1.6v) with thermaltake typhoon so far has been 2.65ghz-2.7ghz. (and if you asked, this isn't bad at all considering heat dump this X2s are pulling off) (Dual prime 95 stable is what I mean when I mean stable)
    That is 1 x2 4200, 2 x2 3800... Getting 4400 soon and will see how that runs.

I am now actually running it 24/7 at 2.76 GHz (276x10) since I need "only" 1.55V for that and it is nice and stable. For 2.8 I need 1.6V and after that no matter what voltage I use it is pretty much 2.81-2.82 and drops dead on SuperPi.

This chip obviously need watercooling and 3 GHz would be quite accessible. I can clearly see the temperatures taking off fast unlike my 3700 San Diego whre I can use 1.65-1.7V for every day use.

Thank GOD XS Is Back Up!

I was going crazy not being able to get on here! This is my first stop even before my email... LOL

Anyway here is my latest 2.95ghz @ 1.58v prime stable for 9hrs... I also added a HS to the PWMIC area so that helped a little. Then I added 90mm fan to the bottom of the case cuz there was a pocket of hot air and it was going right to the chipset. So overall its running alot cooler.

Look out, Phase Change here I come!

I was able to break through my 2.7 Ghz wall by adjusting to max asynch and preamble.

Auto was setting 8 asynch and 5 preamble. I changed it to 9 and 5.5. That really help to stablilize my cpu.

Hey buckshot what are you running your ram at cuz I cant get mine over 270 or windows crashes. Of you can could you post your settings? Memtest will run np at 320 but as soon as I boot to windows it crashes.

njkid, this thread has convinced me to get a x2 3800+ over a venice 3000+. Hope it overclocks half as well as yours!
Shall be under water, on a dfi, so hoping to follow in your footsteps!

dual prime stable running large FFT on both cores for 9hrs+ is what i consider stable. I can run small FFT on one core/large FFT on another and vice versa for hours and as soon as i run both on large FFT my considered stable o/c becomes mush

considering taking IHS off although i am only seeing max 40c load temps on my BIX3 water setup so i don't expect this will magically get me much further.

    Here you go:

Please note that I was was only using one stick of ram during the time the screen shot was taken but I have confirm that these settings works with both sticks @ 300x10.

NICE Buckshot! I just havent had much luck with these Gskill's dont know why.. So I think I am going to sell them and get something else. Thats to bad cuz they are only a week old. I have tried so many different configs whith the timings I was able to boot at 285mhz but they needed 3.2v. Which I didnt want to give to them for very long! Maybe I just got some duds.. Dont know! Anyway GREAT OC~!

Thanks njkid32! I wouldn't have bought this 3800 X2 if it weren't for your thread. After reading it, I headed straight to Fry's to pick the same week/stepping as yours . So I got to say THANK YOU!

thx man i always wondered why people blked out thier serial number when posting thier steppings? how can someone rip me off by jacking my serial number? wouldnt they need the box and chip to do anything along with the stock hsf wich also had the serial on it?

    thx perc,

thats the one I have too, how does it clock?
Im not an overclocker anymore since I've broken my old computer, it was due to high temps caps broken (bad caps at the time back then with the mobo manufacturers)

havent pushed it yet but so far 10x260 at 1.55v doesnt seem to be any problem at all. i have it under phasechange so i pray for somthing around 2800-3000mhz out of it from what im seeing right now i realy dont see 2800mhz being a problem....

Not at all Perc. 2 chips I got hit 2.95ghz fine on single phase around 1.62v. (bios 1.64v)
100% stable :P Cooler temp I bet can net above 3ghz which I am having problem keeping steady unless more voltage.
