Besides it doesn't even have a 150 memory divider (which I need to get my memory to DDR 500), whereas the DFI mobos have. Lesson I learned, my next system next year; either AMD's Quad core (Altair) or Intel's Quad core (native, not the cheapo-fast solution of Kentsfield), whatever is faster; is gonna have a DFI mobo.

I'm in the same boat as you jamex. RAM is running at 215MHZ 2.5/3/3/6 1T on the 133 divider (stock is 3/4/4/8). I couldn't get it to run at 270MHZ (166 divider). I'm going to try it again at 270 with 4/4/4/8 1T timings and 2.8v. My chip boots at 3106 but wont run stable for more that 5 minutes Orthos. It looks like 3006 is the limit for me. Gotta be happy with that though.

That's a good stepping. I have the same chip, from Newegg, and it is rock solid at 3006MHz 1.47v. Set 2T on the RAM and see what you get. What divider are you on?

Well i would take out the extra ram but in lazy.
I have messed around with the ram a lot and believe me i dosen't like going much faster then what i have them at with the cpu.
Also my mem divider is @100 so with the 300FSB i get to a grand total of >PC2700 ram. I guess ill just have to wait until i can buy 2x1gb sticks. Wont be long

Yeah guys I also have the same steppings (CCBBE 0616 XPMW) and I'm stable at 3006Mhz @ 1.46v as measured with multimeter,(Prime95 14+hr with no errors or warnings but stopped because I had to leave for class). Although I'm very happy with chip I'm selling becasue after getting a new GTX I'm realizing I really need a C2D to take full-advantage of this card! Overall this is the best AMD chip I've ever owned!

just got my 170 from newegg and got a CCBBE 0615EPMW is this gonna be capable of reaching 3.0 you think? I saw that the 165's with this stepping were doing great but not sure on the 170's.

I just got the same 170 stepping from newegg today myself... found this thread and glad to see they are getting 3.0ghz!

I assume a need to switch to water cooling for 3ghz? My last system was a 754 A64 3000+ o/c @ 2.4ghz I built it about two years ago... I was planning on using the thermaltake volcano #? (all copper base/fins with 80mm fan) that I have had on the 754 but I'm not sure if that is enough cooling for this chip? I have been looking at the heatsinks on newegg and most appear to be using heat pipes now, even the stock cooler with the opteron... guess what I'm asking is are the air o/c's here got a stronger recommendation or preference for highest opteron 170 speeds on air? Preferably under $50... not looking for the freezers or water cooling just yet. One other thing... are most of the o/c's here running the IHS or taken it off?

My Opty 170 will do 3000mhz but needs 1.6v to keep it stable but that is all right since Im using a good water system which keeps it around 32-34C idle and 42-44 under major load with the IHS still on. Its an CCBWE0550UPMW 170

I think the CPU need for the 8800 series cards is overrated, previously all games had been GPU dependent, no reason for that to change now. Sure you want a fast enough CPU to go with it but a 3GHz dual core opty not enough? Come on, let's be real

My take on it anyway. I'd keep the opteron myself and see how everything performs with the 8800. I'll bet that there wouldn't really be that much of a difference between it and the C2D except maybe in some benchmarks.

    I second that.
the only difference you will see with the C2D is in benchmarks. but in-game i don't think there is much of and fps differential

It does show up in games a little but only if you are doing low-res (1024x768) gaming. But if you are doing that, then WHY have a 8800? And who cares whether you get 100 or 110 FPS?!

Heck I'm not getting a 8800 anyway, my X1900XT handles just about everything I throw at it maxed out or close to it

I got a new Opteron 170 from NewEgg.
    Stepping: CCBBE 0615EPMW

Running on an ASUS A8V Deluxe board, stock AMD Heatpipe cooler in closed case (alternative would be Thermaltake Venus 12, haven't tried it yet). Patriot PC4000 DDR, 2gb (1GBx2).

    http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc?id=139068

Stable overclock... finally. It turned into a nightmare when I got to the memory. Apparently buying PC4000 memory was completely pointless, as the moment I put this memory at anything over 200, it freaked out. Major.

Therefore, I had to set the divider on memory WAY low.... so... here's what I finally got to:

    CPU: 10x270 = 2705MHz. (Max 2750 stable) 1.37 volts.
    FSB = 270 (Max 290 stable)
HTT: x3 = 811 MHz. (Stable max untested)
RAM: 180 MHz (Max 200 stable.... rated at 250 frickin MHz, only stable at 200), 2.5/3/3/5/8/1T (SPD timings)... (250 @ 3.0 is rated)... Max voltage per A8V (2.8v?)

I tried my best to get the memory speed up, but it isn't going to be possible due to where the dividers fall, without drastically dropping CPU speed.

Idle temps are 30c, load 51c.

Suggestions? (Other than improve cooling, I know I could do that... but not sure if 200mhz is worth $50 to me)....

im guessing the terribly ram speed is related to ram settings

I don't know about that, there seems to be a very large difference in performance between my Opty and a C2D system with same card. Your right about the benchmarks though but there are also a few reviews where they tested alot of games and the differnece was very substantial. With that said I'm not as gung-ho as I was at first, especially after being able to do some gaming myself. Thanks for your opinion though, your certainly not the only one telling me that!

I got the 170 ccbbe 0615EPMW as well but run quite hot up to 58c with the stock heatsink priming both cores at 2700/1.4v (I can get a bit more speed but my memory tops at 272 mhz). Gaming core temps are always below 50C BTW

I believe I am limited by temps and mobo (asrock dual sata2) but I am not planning to spend more money for a while in computer parts (doctor's recommendation)
