I re-attempted to get a higher OC after updating to the latest F3n BIOS, but nope.
To go from 4.16 GHz to 4.2 GHz & still be LinX stable requires a huge voltage increase, & even more vcore is needed to go past that.
Absolutely no point...it's quite apparent i've reached the max i can reasonably do on air.

    i5 750 @ 4158 MHz (21x198) DDR3-1980 9-9-8-24-74-1N
    vcore - 1.375v BIOS
    llc - enabled
    vtt - 1.23v
    pch - 1.05v (stock)
    pll - 1.8v (stock)
    vdimm - 1.6v
    CPU & PCI-e drive strengh - 700/700 mV (stock)

12+ hrs. P95 Blend & LinX max RAM 50 passes stable

I'm looking into getting a Core i5 750 and an ASROCK P55 Extreme motherboard. I wanted a 4GHz overclock on the CPU. Do you guys think this would be very hard with the motherboard? Does the motherboard have the problematic Foxconn socket? Would I run into issues with only a 4GHz Overclock?

    Thank you!!

I'd stay away from AsRock TBH...i've seen a few too many people having trouble with them with higher OCing on various forums.

Asus P7P55D or Gigabyte P55-UD3R/UD3P would be my "cheaper" choices.
The new Gigabyte P55A-UD3 one w/ USB 3.0 has the non-foxconn socket, also.

I don't really want to go too high on overclocking. My max would be around the VID range. The P7P55D is around $80 more expensive than the ASRock P55 Extreme where I live and it wouldn't be in my budget.

Can't get the Gigabyte anywhere around here.

Well, sounds like you've got limited options.

I'm sure the AsRock will be fine for moderate OCing.

Alright, thanks mate! I might end up just getting an i7, Asus P6T and 3x2GB DDR3 RAM. The i5 system would end up with a price within U$150 of the Core i7. Sounds like its worth getting the i7 since all I do is F@H and the extra PPD would be nice.

I've been pretty happy with my i5 so far. I've actually started lowering the core voltage to around 1.21v while running processor at 3.9GHz (186x21).

It's been extremely stable and temps aren't going through the roof with just an average cooler. I wasn't even planning on buying this processor, but Fry's had a pretty nice combo (i5 and Gigabyte P55-UD3R) for a great price a few weeks ago....I couldn't pass it up.

Actually Asrock board are very good for moderate->high overclock.
I have a P55-PRO(115$) and a 750, and with a FZ120 i have very good results. To bad i have some very cheap memory..
    4ghz 20*200 1.312v other voltages in pictures
    222BKL stable at aproximative 4ghz
4.2ghz 1.376 quick run ...and it didn't burn or shutdown....

still a very good motheboard for it's price.
And my 750(1.225v vid) is a good chip not extraordinary, but a good one...

What would you choose between these three models?

    ASUS P7P55D PRO
    GIGABYTE GA-P55-UD4P
    MSI P55-GD65

I'm going to OC my new i5 860 with two Ati 4890 in CF

Great. It is the Foxconn socket a real threat?

well i was gone for a week fishing.. my trident memory and sata dvd were waiting for me when i got home.. i still need a longer crossfire bridge but i got it running.. it is going to take me a while to figure out all these new bios settings. they are so much different then my maximus se bios..

I'm thinking about running this overclock 24/7. This is with vcore set to run "without vdroop"/LLC enabled and the board overvolts to 1.376v load.
I'll continue to test for long term stability.

    Voltages 232 BCKL...
Can anybody tell me,raising the PCIE frecuency from 100 to 110-120 might help..?

well i finally got xp64 to load with raid on this evga p55 ftw board.. after many failed attempts it ended up being that i needed to install my sata dvd/cd on #0 port so it would continue to load windows.. before i figured that out i tried every way i knew.. playing with it a little today i got it to 95 blend for a couple hours at 4.0.. 1.28 vtt, 1.376 cpu.. max temp 62 degrees under water. i am going to try to lower some volts and test some more.. this is my first time playing with i5. it feels like it has a little more snap then my maximus se and e8500 at 4.0 in games..

Are you guys finding you have to significantly raise your VTT past the max intel spec of 1.2v?

A friend of mine can't get past 3.6 or so on his 860 without using > 1.3 or so VTT. He can hit 4.0 stable with with 1.375 or so.

i don't have much of a clue yet as it is all new to me but i am working on it.. first attempts i used 1.2 vtt with 1.41 cpu and failed a core about 3 min in. i worked vtt all the way up to 1.35 and left cpu at 1.41 and it would run longer but still failed a core. i started looking at other volts and memory.. i raised pch a little and used the 1600 instead of the 18XX on memory.. it passed a hour no problem but got to 70 degrees so i started lowering volts back down and it kept passing until where i got it now.. i will be playing with it some more to find out if i can get my vtt back down to what they spec them for. i see a bunch of people with a lot lower volts on 4.0... i think pch volts and the memory was my issues to begin with but not quite sure yet..

    Hey guys!
    I have a question:
My P7P55D seems to need much more Vcore than e.g. the Gigabye P55-UD4...I had my CPU on the P7P55D, and it needs 1.384V for 20x200, now a friend has this CPU on his P55-UD4, and he needs just 1.344V for 20x200!! Is there that huge difference between the boards? Is the Asus really that bad? And what board should be best for overclocking?
    EVGA P55 LE?
    GA-P55-UD4?
    MSI P55-GD65?

    I don't want that "über"-Board - just overclocking...

Grossmeister, i think that its in your and his CPU. None of cpus are the same. Try to overclock his cpu on your board and find out.
I don't think that the asus is bad.

As stated, every CPU or batch can be different. Some needing more voltage to achieve the same GHz.

I'm being very conservative with my overclocking. I have my i5 750 set at 3.9GHz (186x21) and I only needed 1.21v to run stable (VTT @ 1.15v). I'm sure I can get my CPU to go much higher, but I have just an average cooler in the Hyper 212 Plus.

It's not worth it to me to get a couple more hundred MHz out of it if I have to push the voltage too much (even though the white papers states the voltage for the i5 750 goes up to 1.4v). This way I shouldn't ever have to worry about heat issues or the Foxconn socket problems.

Bottom line, Since I'm not pushing this setup too hard, I don't expect to ever have any problems with my measly 46% overclocked i5 750 processor. Even though I've only had this system for less than a month, I'm extremely happy with its performance. I had a previous E8500 running at 4.2GHz, but this setup encodes videos much faster since it has 4 cores to do the processing.
