720BE + MA790XT-UD4P, dead, any ideas how to resurrect?

    Whole setup went boom.
Well, actually it didn't even go boom, it just turned itself off while sitting idle in windows at stock settings about 2 minutes after windows install had completed.
Since then can't turn it on anymore.

Only thing that happens is leds in cpu cooler turn on for about 0,5 seconds, then it's dead again, no post no nothing.

Allready tried swapping ram, psu, gpu... didn't help.
Also tried the real bios reset by removing the bios battery but didn't help.

Your memory should be in slots 1&2 or 3&4 for dual channel operation. Looks like you have it in 1 and 3. I'd put it in 3&4 to give the CPU cooler some breathing room.

Can't wait for that same combo to arrive tomorrow

Hmm that sux, in order for me to really help you, I would need the port 80 diagnostic code. Without that its just a guessing game.

Have you tried removing your motherboard from the computer case and doing a 'bare-bones' boot attempt with the m/b sitting on a non-conductive surface? There could be a short when it is mounted in the case.

so much about "UD" part in the mobo name that sux man! big time!

also... I hate mobos w/o any signaling LEDs or displays... GA can be Ultra Durable how much thy want, but skipping LEDs, and power\rest switches onboard in 2009 is really lame for premium product\manufacturer!

Unfortunately the board doesn't have anything that would help, no led that lights up when it has power and no error code display...

And I don't even know if it is the cpu or the board that is dead, so no dice on returning the faulty one as it would also mean returning the non faulty one which is not a option, so I am sitting on a 270£ pile of trash..... so much for giving amd another chance.

sure, blame AMD for the mobo crapping out.

shorts can happen but if you unplug the Power supply for a few minutes
or the power supply couldn't take it doubtful though.

Every once in a while one of my backup rigs will just die and not turn back on, and only restart if unplugged/switched off on PSU for 10+ minutes, a hard bios reset doesn't do anything. It's done this with more than one PSU... just worth a try I suppose.

It's not.... but you know how people are in the first moment of being pissed off, they don't always think before they say something.

Anyway, since the shop doesn't have another UD4P in stock it will have to go back to Gigabyte meaning it will most likely take weeks until I get a working board back, so I ordered a UD5P that will be here tomorrow, then I get a RMA going for the UD4P in hopes that it really is the board that is dead and not the Cpu. I have a idea what might have killed it, I had the cpu fan plugged in the mainboard header, then first thing I did was disable fan speed control in the bios to get better cooling for the yet to come oc, however I didn't really check the specs of the fan, which turns out to be a 2300 rpm fan, so maybe it simply pulled too much power from the fan header.

Im not sure if it's a short though, I mean, you could install Windows. If there was a short you wouldnt have been able to do anything.

Also I dont think it's anything like PWM's, otherwise it would smell badly and/or spark/smoke on 2nd attempt to turn it on
