AMD Stops production of socket 939 Opterons

    Sniff sniff.
this comes at a great point seeing i was gonna order a Opteron 170 in a week ro 2

    quote:
THE LAUNCH of Opterons for Socket 939 was obviously just a smoke in the mirror. The complete stock of Opterons model number 14x and 16x (dual-core) dissapeared from e-tailers and retailers, with hundreds of overclockers buying even six or eight CPU's at the same time.

theinq thinks this means that they r going for an early M2 launch

Remember that news from The Inquirer haven't always been so very... exact.
    Well, atleast their grammar isn't...

^This doesn't necessarily mean 939pin Opteron was discontinued.

This "document" The Inquirer got hold of actually states that the listed SKUs were discontinued. Uh, ok. The SKU's were apparently discontinued. So what?

How about a new 939 Opteron SKU?
    Like OSA1??DKA5CF?

with how fast the 165 went out of stock, and constantly remains low in stock, I'd say it won't take long before the opterons are just a thing of the past...

well when everyone else moves onto M2 I'll be waiting in the ebay shadows to snap up your dual core opties hehehe...

I'm planning to take advantage of not having enough money to be able to go to M2 till '07 (probably) so I'm not that bothered. It was nice while it lasted though.

I think the 939 opties and the GTO2 will be remembered as some of the best value OCing components in history. Good times, good times

i have to say, i don't believe it. These optys must be selling like hot cakes, so why end them now? It must just mean that (as was said above) this particular SKU of optys is ending, or it could be downright wrong.
I wouldn't be too suprised if they were just sold as OEM from now on, however.

just to toss my 2 cents in there.

in light of all the information going around re: the Inq article, i made a few calls and got the real story.

1.) the s939 Opterons are NOT going away. Rather, the 1xx series opterons will be transitioned to Socket M2 and positioned as entry level 1P server/workstation procs. AMD will be positioning the X2's as upper-end consumer processors and the A64s will be mainstream. Didn't ask about Sempron since i don't care.

2.) the 2xx and 8xx series Opterons will be moving to Socket F in Q2.

3.) the Opteron 185 is coming Q2, 2006 around the time of the complete transition to M2. This will be an M2 part only.

4.) EOL processors will be the 140, 142 (i think the 140 is EOL'd already, but, whatever). 144 is coming soon with the 146 to follow. the Opteron 165 is NOT BEING discontinued though stock will remain tight INTO Q1, 2006. You will see some part discontinued in Q3/Q4 next year with the appropriate pricing moves happening along the way.

    just to clarify.

M2 must be non ECC, because it's mainstream oriented.
    M2 uses DDR2.
