Question did i just act before thinking ?

    ahoy!

I just discoverd theses forums the other day and it didnt take too long before i felt the need to post

The thing is that i some days ago ordered a Xp2400 cpu which will arrive monday. Last night i took a look at the bios of my mobo Abit KG7 raid and *gasp* it seems that it will only support a mutilpier of 13 ...there is an option called "above 13" tho.

So my question is : will this be a month with very little money over for beer or can the KG7 handle my new cpu ?

    TL|,

    Welcome to Xtreme

I don't think the KG7 officially supports the 2400+...but I'd think you could unlock it to make it work in it @ a lower mult. Good luck, hopefully someone will have a def. answer.

    Thumbs up

    *update*

    Got my xp2400+ today H00ray

set the option to "above 13" in bios and it booted just fine at 15X133. even tho it says "unknown cpu "
Ran 3dmark (god forbid) once , that worked fine too
Back to bios fsb up to 152 voltage to 1.85

    Boots at 15X152 = 2280mhz
Ran 3Dmark again ... 13203 points this is with a Radeon 9700 512mb pc2700 (samsung) and the usual crap

seems fine so far but the temp went up to 41 (motherboard monitor reading) so i turned the Vcore down to eeeem the setting under 1.85 1.75 perhaps and im testing that for stability now.

oh oh allmost forgot to mention im cooling this puppy with a water setup, might put up some pics if i can get my hands on a digicam.

Anyways doesnt that #dmark score seem a bit low ? ( i really have no idea since im no longer a fan of the damn program)

Allso any suggestions on what to do now since im forced to clock useing fsb and if i put it up to 153 i randomly get stop screens when booting to win2k stating that i have an "inaccessible boot device" , would actually useing the raid function help ?

Hope you could understand something from all that and thanks for reading

Yes. My stock 2400+/9700 (no CPU/GPU overclocks) bench is around the 14.5k range. IMO, you're about 1500 marks low with that fsb assuming the GPU is running stock.

Well, I would think even the 1/4 divider should handle 153fsb pretty well. Perhaps trying trying the 1/5 divider (if you haven't done so). Also, what memory speed/settings are you using with the 2700? Maybe too high/aggressive?

bigdawginva, his score is not low. The KG7 uses the AMD 760 chipset. Yours uses the KT333 chipset, generations ahead. Unless TL| upgrades his motherboard 13k seems like a decent 3dmark score i feel.

    thanks for the answers

the Kg7 does indeed use the AMD 761 chipset and imo this board has never deliverd what i expected , allso the fact that it broke down twice allready (in 11 months) doesnt really help

anyways there is no 1/5 devider only ones available is 1/3 and 1/4 and my memory was running at the bois defaul 2.5 so i set it to 2 just to test what this would do. First boot i got a stopscreen "boot device not accessible" quick reboot and it win2k loads up fine, ran 3dmark with a new topscore of 13370 (hihi) that would be a 167 points increase which isnt that much.

acutally i have been thinking all day *grumble.. its the damn memorybandwhith ... mumble*
So i guess i have to get myself a new mobo after all :/
....which brings us to the next question : what mobo should i get ?
something with builtin lan might be nice , any suggestions on that ?

@TL|, i think it's a fair score for a KG7. Remember the AMD 760 chipset doesn't like high FSB. Perhaps it's time to upgrade to an Abit KD7? I think that's available right now, if you can wait a little longer, go for the nforce2 solution of abit.

well i spent most of my day optimizing airflow over my radiator (maxxxexpert MXL mono) and while i was whoreing about with that i I decided to take a look under the heatsink on the amd761 , took it off and :O wtf, there was some thermalcompund on there (about 1/3 of the chipset was coverd and there was allso something else that looks like a thin oil or water O_o .
Anyways i decided to lap the heatsink and i allmost fainted - this heatsink probebly only had about 30% that acctually connected to the chipset but after a good 5 minutes of sanding it looked ok

put some articsiver inbetween and off i went.
seems that i can now do 155mhz fsb without the stopscreens on boot (use to be 152) and this gave me a boost in 3Dmark (seems i have become quite a little 3dmark whore of late) 13553 is the new top score.

All there is to do now is to wait for the Abit Nforce2 board i guess

Hey glad to hear the KG7 supports 2400+

With AS3 on the northbridge and the stock heatsink I was able to reach 162Mhz FSB stable to pass 3dmark.

Maybe you want to raise the Vdimm a little to be sure the CAS2 is handled ok.
