Slightly ahead of its time...

Just got the new CPU today...it is indeed a direct swap.

Tried a pin mod to 200MHz FSB...no go.

Intel must have either disabled the appropriate memory divider or got sick of pim mods and disabled 200 MHz FSB on the chipset itself.

Sorry for going off-topic but, you are using my dream system (the one in your sig). Could you share some benchmark results like 3dmarks (any of them), pcmark, hdtach etc. I know you probably didn't built this system as a gaming rig but I just wanna know how well it holds up against a gaming rig like me. You see I'm graduating soon and planning to built a media editing workstation something like yours and I was wondering should I keep the gaming rig or not.
You can PM me your results if you want and again sorry about the off topic post.

Did you have to do anything to the motherboard to make the Merom work? e.g. modify the bios

Did some digging on the FSB pin mod issue...apparently for the Calistoga chipset, Intel disabled the ability of the chipset to recognize unsupported straps.

From the 945PM datasheet: "These values are determined by the BSEL [2:0] frequency straps. Any unsupported straps will render the GMCH host interface inoperable."

It figures...

I think I read that they solder the chips in there.

I think it's just in the laptops they do that.

Here's an clip from an Anandtech article I read a few months ago:
"While the currently shipping MacBook Pros should be compatible with future Merom chips, the Core Duo processor is actually soldered onto the motherboard and is socketless; that means there's no removing, replacing or upgrading your CPU."
