    Announcing Intel Core 2 Duo

The new Conroe and Merom based Intel Core chips get a new name, Core 2 Duo. Would that be core to duo, or core two duo. Anyway, the Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Duo Extreme Edition are the frist desktop based Core chip's lacking the Netburst architecture. The Core 2 Extreme will be the first available, following the standard Core 2 Duo E6700, and so on. Merom and Conroe are both based on the 65nm manufacturing process, and feature aggressive power management features and a shared L2 cache. Conroe and Merom will both be backwards compatible with recently manufactured desktop and mobile motherboards.

Intel's recent roadmap confirms Conroe will be shipped sometime in July of 2006, followed by Merom in August of 2006. Intel is expected to show off these new chips at Computex 2006, on June 6th.

    Lame-us maximus naming right there.

Though the performance is anything but lame. Looking forward to release.

If all NDA's are lifted on June 6th, it will be a fine day indeed.

Um, I thought the XE of conroe wasn't supposed to be out until Q4, and alot of current motherboards do in fact not support conroe (?)

Now if they have changed this then good news, but all this back and forth with conflicting info isn't any good at all...

recently manufactured. LOL that could mean anything. But we know that it will only be supported in the newer revisions of motherboards

I am sure it will be a paper launch but at least it won't be delayed!

I got my information from Daily-Tech, so if mobo's arent backward's compatible, I don't want people with guns at my front door waiting for me

That has to be one of the most pathetic names ever created...
Why don't they just call it "good crap because we don't have a real name for it because we can't do that"

Cause that is too long to fit on a sticker.

I think they should have kept the Pentium thing going. All educated PC users will know it's Conroe and will dissassociate it with the Pentium 4 Prescotts (which I think were a failure compared to AMDs Athlon 64s). And also, all regular PC users who have been used to seeing Pentium branding or 10+ years will see it as the next logical upgrade...

I hate intel's play with compatible north bridges for conroe.

I for one am sticking with a cedar mill or a presler...changing motherboards every 3 months isn't a game i prefer to play.

The naming is silly. But I guess this will be Pentium all over again in the naming department. Frankly Core Duo^2 would have been a nicer name for DC chip.

i think they gave it this retarted name so they can have a cool slogan for the commercials:

2 Duo or not 2 Duo.
if Intel uses this im gonna move to advertising .

Conroe looks very very nice but i upgraded a few months ago to socket 939 and 2GB of DDR.
getting a X2 would financially make more sense then get a conroe with mobo and 2GB of DDr2.

although it all kind of depends on the price.

Yeah the name really sucks. Keeping up the Pentium name would have been a lot better since people are used to seeing it and think that it's a good processor and stuff so they will be like, "Hey, the Pentium 5 is out, let's buy it!" Now they're just gonna be like, "Wtf? What's this Duo thingy? Wasn't that for laptops?"

I'm a bit in same boat as you, tho I bought this system last summer and 1GB ram kit, I'd want the performance of Conroe but then again I don't feel tempted to already switch out mobo, ram and cpu. I just hope X2 or Opteron DC prices goes down when Conroe arrives, I refuse to pay like twice as much for a cpu that will perform worse than the Intel counterparts.

Yeah me too. I bought 2GB RAM last year, hoping to get an X2 or Opteron as well when AM2 and Conroe arrive. I might just wait till next gen before I let go of S939.

Sounds like a name Apple would use. It's redundant.

"Extreme" has been done to the point it has no meaning - except here of course. Instead of Extreme and Duo I would have gone with "EP Edition" and "Spankage". HAwt!

Then you might want to weary of the new Intel and AMD high end procs that are said to be coming out.. there are Rumors about them adding Protected hardware circuitry.. Fortunately I know AM2 is without it atleast for now..

personally i don't give a damn about the name. they could have called it GirlScoutMahem Duo and it wouldn't matter. i actually like the naming convention. Pentium 5 would have made more sense but Core works for me.

and why are they releasing the dual-core chip before the single-core? at least i was under the impression that Conroe was dual and Merom was the single core version of Conroe. isn't that right?
