    Prescott IHS removed, pics to come + DICE results

    I know this isn't too extreme, but for someone like me it is. I got my prescott celly D's IHS off, WITHOUT RIPPING OFF THE CORE!!! so I will post OC'ing rsults in this thread when I get mobo + DICE. If you wan't some clear pics, I will post, cause most people took really fuzzy pics in that thread on removing the IHS on prescotts.

    Here are the pis.

    First of all, anyone thinking about this, It requires a TON of patience. I also found out that the thermal solder/compound is actually quite maliable at room temperature. Without further ado, pics.

    no, but better than leaving semi-hard thermal epoxy.

    you should have chemically cleaned the die, but gj on it

    and clean your room lol

    I didn't actually go very deep, just enought to get the epoxy off


    my sister has a conp I can test this on, let me see if she is here.


    Anyone wanna help me clean my room

    Anyway, this is the cheapest of CPU's so it isn't like losing an FX or an EE

    yeah, really, I don't care, I bought it off my tip off, and I could buy another one if this one died. It was a lot of fun, what you have to do, instead of cutting around the edges and just yanking the IHS off; you have to cut really slowly untill you can get the razor through any of the sides, then take another razor and slowly slip both under opposite sides of the IHS (only a little ways), then leave it like that for a few minutes, and rotate around in 90 degree angles, each time slipping the razor in further untill you hear a *POP* then the IHS will just come off easily. The silver goo is actually still covering the core, but you cant tell from the flash, so I have not reached the black core.

    This is really funny, most of the Dothan guys were talking about how and what type of IHS can be installed thinking that install a IHS will make it run cooler and, the P4 guys / A64 guys actually trying to remove these IHS thinking about that could make it cooler

    The Dothan guys need to explain to me HOW adding another useless layer for the energy to traverse is going to help cool the CPU core.........

    i would guess - surface area to extract the heat from the core

    Well, dothan cores are pretty weak and getting proper contact with the core is pretty hard with heavy heatsinks and containers and evaps. Once you got a perfect IHS contact, you core is unable to crush and mounting is easier too !!

    They added it to prevent RMA of chipped die. It's obvious that an IHS will produce higher temps.

    my Pentium 4 3.0c northwood ihs popped out on it's own when i was removing the prometeia :p
