2x1gb kits and gaming instability.... post here

I have noticed that recently with the rise of 1gb kits and 1gb modules that there are many that are able to get thier ram super pi 32mb, prime, and a single 3dmark loop stable; but cannot get thier ram game stable.

If you suffer from this problem, or have a solution please post your ram settings here so we can deal with this prob.

My G.Skill HZ's are fine - I've had a freeze here and there while gaming, but I doubt it is related to ram, otherwise it would happen more often.

Yeah, this would be me.. I've tried every combination of drive strength/data strength and about half of all the TREF values. Still trying to game with them.. I'm going to try something with max bypass whatever next and RWQB. I've got 2T on and everything, 3/2 drive strength, and they won't even work at 245.

my Mushkin XP4000 (UCCC) are spectacular up to 278mhz, whereupon they hit the wall and 279 is a no-go. My regular runs of 3DMark are at 277mhz, they start randomly crashing around 280mhz.

btw, these are the non-Redline 991483 that go for $205USD right now.

Just started testing the new game rig on EQ2. Bombed out several times on my Infineons at 255. Reset to auto detect on MAL and RP and now it seems fine. If they're ok for a couple hours I'll bump it up again.

BUt what could be causing this gaming instability in Infineon chips? I mean, one would wonder if they pass, say 4 hours of Sp2004, Superpi 32m, and OCCT, that the sticks would be stable for at least a couple of hours of gaming.

Why would gaming trigger the crashes and random reboots?

Hey it's not just infineon, I have UCCC here that I can't get stable no matter what.. I'm getting some ballistix back from RMA in a few days so I'll see what I can do with those

I have the same problem here.
I run pi 32m with 3-3-3-8 2.7v 265mhz with my 2x 1gb g.skill ZX, but when i run some game, freeze my computer or reboot in less than 3 minutes.
    now, i´m using 227mhz 2,5-3-2-5 2.7v and it´s stable.

the problem seems to occur in the 1gb modules at high mhz, such as running them at 4000+ speeds (250mhz), its not too much of a loss if you can run tight timings at lower speeds, but still, this is XS and we want more

Could it be a memory controller issue on the cpu ?? From what I have gathered, 250 HTT is generally not a problem. That is what the pc4000 RAM is rated for at stock timings, but 260 & up (1:1) seems to be a problem. A lot of games really stress memory now. Could it be that the mem controllers just can't hack it at HTT's >250 ?

It's possible. Would probably be helpful to see a breakdown of regular A64 top ocs and opty ocs on the memory.

    not a64 -> opterons but E3/E4 -> E6 (single core)
and single core -> dual core
Got a fan over those memory sticks? No? Well get to it before you kill them

    Here guys....chew on this.

I was running into the same situation with my Ballsitix. They could prime 24 hours, pass SPI32, and loop memtest for 24 hours at 250 mhz but I would get intermittent freezing while gaming. This was with an FX 57 under phase.

Strangely enough, lowing the mhz on the RAM didn't really help. Whether I lowered the RAM at 1:1 (and upped the CPU multi) or used a divider it was a no go. The only way lowering the RAM mhz worked was to tighten the timings to 2-2-2-5 which only ran to about 210mhz. Anything at CAS 3 could not be run from 200 to 250 without random freeze (note the ballistix are rated at 3-4-4-8).

I tried ALL the BIOS settings...nothing worked. More voltage, less voltage, Vmem, Vcore, chipset voltage, HT bus...didn't matter.

Then, just for the hell of it, I raised my mhz. I lowered the mutliplier and upped the RAM to 280mhz 3-3-3-8 and lowered the voltage to 2.62v. BAM! Stable gaming. Been this way for 6 weeks now. Not a single freeze.

Now, I'm not saying this is the fix, but it has now worked on 2 of my rigs with DFI boards and 2 x 1G Ballistix kits (my gaming rig, and my mutlimedia rig that sees some gaming from time to time when friends visit). The situation reminds me a lot of my Gskill LE and FF that would not like to run at lower mhz (unless you changed to super tight timings (2-2-2-5).

What this tells me is that it is definitely a "tuning" issue. Something between the memory controller and RAM at various frequencies is causing the problem. I think with the right BIOS adjustments, this issue can be fixed. 3D gaming is still the most stressful on the CPU memory controller and RAM.....this is why we see it with 3D apps.

This must be only high fsb as my ocz 3200plat 2x1g Infinion BE-5 will run 225fsb at 5-2-3-2 and 250fsb at 5-2-3-2.5 no problem for games or pi.I killed a stick of tcc5 trying over 250fsb with my dothan rig so I dont know this rams limit.

thanks for the heads up. There seems to be a new batch of ballistix out now that will work high mhz at low voltage, living in the UK i think i have the old batch because i cant game ut2004 or cs:s at 280 3-3-3-8 2.8vdimm, but can prime and spi23mb all day

your results enforces my view that it is the ram IC, rather than the memory controller.

Yes....both sets of sticks are only 7 weeks old. I think they are a newer batch. The first pair of Ballistix I bought in August died in October. The RMA replacement RAM did so well, I gambled and bought a second set. Both sets are doing great....I just HAVE to run them at high mhz and low voltages. Strange.

I think it is the RAM ICs as well.

Posting something like this is a bit of a tease that only frustrates the users experiencing this trouble. No offense meant. If you can help people out with some knowledge, dropping a few hints would be nice.
