    AMD to stop 14x and 16x S939 Opterons

    I just recently read this so I don't know if its old news over here or not, but I'll post a thread for new discussion anyway.
    Regards.

    "The complete stock of Opterons model number 14x and 16x (dual-core) dissapeared from e-tailers and retailers, with hundreds of overclockers buying even six or eight CPU's at the same time. Reason: Opteron, a 1MB L2 cache processor was priced lower than Athlon 64 models with 512KB of L2 cache."

    Note that it seems only the lower clocks are being stopped.

    Please change the thread title accordingly, this is extremely misleading.

    Although, if people are in panic I might sell my optis for lots of cash

    People on www.overclockers.com.au are selling their 146's for $400AUD! (Around $300USD!)

    Silly n00bs...

    I personally wouldnt sell my 2.92GHz 1.40V Opteron.

    The article does list:
    939 Opterons

    It doesn't list the specific chips such as 14x and 16x (only that certain ones are sold out completely).

    So maybe this means we will not be seeing much more out of the 939 Pin opteron line... time will tell I guess.

    so what is their problem really shouldn't they be glad we buy tons of their cpus? upping the stock prizes would be more logical. Anyway they had this coming. Here you go fellas, these chips DO fit your motherboard!

    The reason for phasing these cpu's out is because they were never intended as a "long term" production chip. The s939 Opties are based on the E4 San Diego core which is nearing it's end. The s939 Opterons were basically a means for AMD to clear out the remaining E4 cores since they are shifting their process to dual cores. Eventually, even the "single core" cpu's will be based on the dual-core die.......

    Personally I'd love for them to do a early M2 launch like the Inq article speculates but I think s7e9h3n (ugh you need a easier to remember/type name !!) is right, just getting rid of inventory. AFAIK M2 launch is still scheduled for mid/late April.

    I've had a 146 on order for the last 3 weeks and they're in stock today - with the price up nearly 30 quid. Stepping is CACJE 0546; they also expect another batch. I've asked to pay the diff and have one NOW!

    So they're not finished yet.

    That is just inventory that is still enroute from warehouses and stuff, so you'll be seeing them out there for the next few weeks or so still just not after that if the Inq is right on this.

    Just use one of the various sites that'll allow you to buy in the US and ship to Germany. There is still taxes and all though, so I dunno what the price would work out too...

    quote from the inq story:
    "This has come to a close, as we have received a document that goes to show that company has decided to stop production of several different SKU's.

    Stopped items from AMD for Q4
    SDA2500BXBOX
    SDA3100BXBOX
    ADA3000BPBOX
    ADA3200BPBOX
    ADA3500BPBOX
    939pin Opterons "

    so, does that mean nothing below a 3800+ (1 core or 2)?

    Just for completeness (from labs.anandtech.com):

    Stopped items from AMD for Q4
    SDA2500BXBOX = AMD Sempron 64 (754) 2500+ 256KB Palermo
    SDA3100BXBOX = AMD Sempron 64 (754) 3100+ 256KB Palermo
    ADA3000BPBOX = AMD Athlon 64 (939) 3000+ 512KB Venice
    ADA3200BPBOX = AMD Athlon 64 (939) 3200+ 512KB Venice
    ADA3500BPBOX = AMD Athlon 64 (939) 3500+ 512KB Venice

    I think all these are E3 steppings, which implies E6 is still in production. Nothing to be seen here.

    Dunno if they really "clear out the remaining E4 cores". I mean, 99% of the Opteron 939 buyers are overclockers, and these people would love this CPU no matter if it's called Athlon, Opteron or even Bacon. Why didn't they just sell them as Athlons if so? It's not like we wouldn't notice it if they did, Opteron got it's reputation because of it's overclocking potential and not because of it's name. Why using their Opteron brand for this?

    But yeah, there are no 1.8 and 2.0 GHz A64 with 1 MB cache. That's what they needed to sell them quick enough without changing prices too much.

    The reports are too confusing.

    From what we know we can only securely conclude that E3 Venices are out, except the 3800+ (for whatever reason, might be reporting error).

    For the Opterons, the same inquirer article mentions on one hand that only the slow-clocked are out and on the other hand all are out. This is obviously rubbish.

    I don't think that AMD will discontinue the Venice and San Diegos and migrating everything to Manchesters and Toledos, it does not make sense. Considering that always the demand is higher for the mainstream products (A64 3000+/3200+) than for the more expensive ones (Starting from the A64X2 3800+), it will be less profitable manufacture only Dual Core Processors that are twice as big as a Single Core counterpart when you will sell most of them as Single Core Processors due to the higher demand anyways. What they're getting rid of is the ones with one defective Core.
    As stated, the Venice Rev. E3 is phased out for the Venice Rev. E6 (They probabily still having Venice Rev. E3 3800+ in stock to get rid of), and will be selled in conjuntion with the Manchesters with one Core disabled (Because as I sayed, there is no reason to shift production to only Dual Core Processors if you sell more Single Core Processors. That is a silice waste). Discontinuing the Opterons is a shame for those that weren't able to buy them in its time, but well, they comed as a gift and now vanishes, they comed as an unseen surprise and that is. As worst than that is that the Sempron 2500+ get discontinued, because that one was 10 dolars cheaper than the 2600+ but bringed 256 KB Cache L2 anyways.

    I think it's probobly will come something else, it doesn't make sense to stop every "cheap" cpu.

    well, it's just the sealed box ones that are going to be discontinued, should still be able to get them OEM, which makes sense, many people who build thier own computers do not ues the stock HSF.

    As I just mentioned, all the above codes are for E3 stepping chips, which means the E6 Venice would not be affected (assuming the report is true).

    That sucks.

    Bad point for AMD, as if they are loosing money for selling that much optys...
    If 3000+ were very good clockers, then a lot of us will buy them, I bet 90% 939 opty sold in the last month was sold to overclockers.
