    Socket F pics

Today some socket F pics have shown up.

Not much known yet as everything is under NDA, but the socket is the same type as Intel's socket T. Also known as LGA (Land Grid Array), people know socket T mostly as socket 775.

The socket has 1206 pins on the bottom and the clip functions as extra ground as well. So 1207 pins CPU is correct.

It is not know if the extra pins are for extra HT busses, integrated PCI Express or Quad channel DDR2.

According to the engineers that build the motherboard the extra pins are simply to support registered DDR2. But that could just be AMD creating more rumors.

I have more larger pics, but can't attach em here. Available on request, if a admin would please attach them here.

No, M2 is for the desktop and will have 940 pins, AKA the new Socket 939.
S1 is for notebooks and light systems AKA the new Socket 754.

Socket F is the new server socket AKA the new Socket 940.

    See this pic:

    Left = Socket S1
    Right = Socket M2

Jup, just like Socket T (AKA LGA 775 AKA Socket 775) from Intel.

This helps power distribution, and prevents CPUs from being damaged.

Also it's more secure so the CPU doesn't get ripped out if its socket when removing the heatsink.

Ooo that sounds painful. Like ripping hairs when you take a band-aid off.

    Must be quad-channel memory

Hypertransport doesn't take many pins and AMD will surely do on-chip PCIe for the desktop processors as well.

That, and maybe more ground pins. Or more power pins for quad-core.

yeah it doesnt help a helluva lot. A friend of mine was looking to build a new pc, but found such a sweet deal on ebay he couldnt pass it up. When it arrived at his house, it looked like it had been dropped based on the smashed corner of the box. The inertia must have caused the heatsink to snap its retaining bolts, pulling the cpu right out of the socket (775) bending most of teh pins in the socket, somehow gouging the IHS on the cpu, and denting the top of the Corsair 5400 stick closest to teh cpu. one nice thing is how freakin easy installation of one is.

Sounds the same too, happens to me often. Artic Silver 5 is sticky stuff.

Desktop CPUs with M2 sockets will only have 940 pins, so no PCI Express there.

I think integrated PCI Express won't show it's face till K10 hits the market in a few years.

I wish This socket will really support quad channel ddr2, so each core gets its own dual channel ddr2, and pci express integrated looks good for gamers.
    Thanks

This is an incorrect assumption. Socket M2 may not have PCI Express, but the 940 pins is not a reason.

For desktop, there are a great many pins unused in the current 939 socket, because of the smaller # of hypertransport links.

Hypertransport takes about ~100 pins PER CHANNEL, and 8xx Opterons have 3 channels, whereas desktop parts only need 1. Thus you get at least 200 pins right there for something else.

Look at the 939 pinout to see the number of unused / gnd pins.

Also, someone above claimed HT did not require many pins-- that's incorrect.

each channel = 16 parallel bit channels * 2 directions * 2 pins for differential signals + a number of pwr/gnd/etc pins. If you look at the 940 socket pin descriptions, you'll see it is ~ 100 per channel.

So in the 940 socket, about 300 pins are for Hypertransport.

the new amd mobile socket manages dual chanel ddr2 on less than 700 pins, so there do seem to be a large number of pins used for something more than ground or power, unless the desktop chips are to be far more demanding than the mobile versions.

Fifty bucks says you can buy Socket F before you can buy socket M2!

If the clip functions as a ground, then it may be impossible to remove the IHS.
I guess that wont be too bad, since most people leave the opteron IHS alone...
but what if new socket designs implement this???

lets just hope they make the pins a bit more sturdy than those of the Socket T

for all intents and purposes, K10 should be considered canned. K8L will most likely replace K10, it'll be quad core'd and most likely move to 8 cores, I suppose AMD is hoping that multi-threaded applications will skyrocket with the lower cost of multiple core processors, which would give it an edge over memron and conroe, but if it dosent, then AMD will end up in quiet a bind.

as for the LGA 1207 socket, I use a LGA775 socket myself, and as long as you're not clumsy then you shouldn't have any problems, I mean honestly how often does the average user, or even the average overclocker remove their processor.

K9 is the one that's canned, not K10. K10 will still be here someday.

As for multi-threading, most extensive business programs are multithreaded... I've personally seen the latest version of 3dstudiomax put 8 cores to 100% usage...
